About the whole controversy(?) of Sita shown fighting in Ramayana film: PS: I am at the moment, neutral about the film and might mostly not get to watch it in theaters. Many learned people rightly pointed out that restraint and Paativratya are the landmarks of Shri/Lakshmi. For the warrior aspect of Her to come out, the male counter part has to be proven unsuitable/incomplete (as in the case of wars with Mahishasura or Bhandasura - That’s in modern parlance, a multiverse level crisis). But Ravana was Rama's fight and She was here to only prod Him in the direction. Now coming to this artistic urge to portray Her as a fighter. For a long long while, I delighted at the idea. Maybe a part of me still does. Why? Here comes the uncomfortable truth. Unlike the stories of other pativratas like Anasuya, Savitri, Sumati, Sukanya, Damayanti, etc, Sita's story does not lend a sense of assurance. We see her pass through the fire ordeal and social and aristocratic censure to such an extent that Rama, knowing her truth, had to let her go. Despite the one lakh sixteen interpretations, explanations and excuses given by the whole cosmos of Sampradayas, Darshanas and so on, this remains a deep civilisational wound that will not heal. Because for the first time, we see perception trump truth. We see maryada backstabbing Dharma. And there is no closure for that in this Avatara. It will pinch and it will keep pinching us. No, this is not a censure of Rama. He bore most pain than any of us can imagine and we break our heads wondering why? This is the cost of blind conflation of Dharma with maryada. The closure if we observe, comes in Krishnavatara, where we see Him ruthlessly rip apart every 'maryada' that was harming Dharma rather than upholding it. It seems like some blissful higher plane rejection of lower rules. It was a clinical, surgical removal of the rot that had infested protocol. But it is not easy to reconcile. The pinch and pain remain. And we all managed to find our cope with it. One of those coping methods, mainly of modern artists, poets, storytellers is this attempt to portray her as a warrior. Because somewhere we are coping telling ourselves that this warriorly nature will be her defence in her lonely period as a mother. Somehow the fact that She could bend elements like Earth and Fire to Her will, thanks to Her Paativratya, does not convince us. Somehow we are unable to see the logical fallacy that showing Her as a fighter would mean accepting Her go down fighting with Ravana, who She could burn with a glance if She willed does not strike us. I use the term we because I include myself in that tribe despite my realisation of the above two facts. Knowing to realising is a journey that requires us to see beyond what limits us. Hope we all get there. Coming back to the film, I dont care. I am neither interested in defending it nor will lose my BP dissing it.
