A good rule: the exact opposite. Student movements almost universally support the worst shit ever
A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. Students helped Castro and Khomeini rise to power, and Nazi student groups opposed the Weimar Republic. britannica.com/topic/Red-Guar… encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art… aei.org/education/actu…

the "Ideas guy" always think their ideas is the value. But in art and theoretical physics you learn from day 1 that ideas are cheap - if you thought of it, someone probably already thought of it first. The main thing is the execution and how the work evolves during execution
A.I. folks are confusing having an idea with creating something and that is where the disconnect is.

one of the best running bits of the last 30 or so years is that ben affleck is actually really smart
Ben Affleck (Hollywood star & Artists Equity CEO) talks about how he fine-tunes open video models by unfreezing weights and trained only the last cinematic layer so a film crew can hit real production standards. for context, Ben Affleck founded InterPositive in 2022, a 16-person AI shop for film post and Netflix bought it in March 2026 for $587 mn in cash. He needed that model because public video models were trained on his peers' films, and he did not think that was a real business. So InterPositive raised money, shot its own dataset for 8 months on a controlled stage, and used it only as late-stage training. Each new film then trains a private model on its own dailies, so the production keeps the footage and the learning. That is the product Netflix paid $587 million for. ---- From "Bloomberg Live" YouTube channel, (link in comment)

An enormous amount of anti-AI sentiment from people who could benefit from it is because they identify too much with their job. “Draftsman” is no longer a job. Literal white-collar status can only be maintained by staying ahead of the ever-accelerating tech curve.

it's incredible honestly i think he probably liked solving problems with a specific method and now better methods exist and it's a little heartbreaking, maybe dangers of identifying too much with your work i guess

BREAKING: For the first time since the Iran war began, JPMorgan says it no longer has a baseline view on oil, writing "we simply don't know how to model the endgame," and that the assumption that the Middle East disruptions are temporary is "becoming increasingly difficult to sustain," per JPMorgan Global Research. The bank says it had assumed there were economic red lines the Trump administration would be unwilling to cross, and that six months later "many of those lines have been crossed, yet the exit strategy is less clear, not more." Chevron's CEO said this week the Great fuel crisis has officially arrived, as Trump officials continue to claim the disruption temporary.

🚨 New paper! arxiv.org/abs/2609.11948 In 2021, a group of climate scientists realised that different attribution methods in climate modelling gave the same answer, and conjectured that this holds in general. It turns you can prove this with Game Theory! 🧵

Hard to elucidate the difference between first and third world upper middle to upper class values/sensibilities better than with this post.
Imagine an Al Jazeera photographer intentionally waiting for the cycle guy to come into the frame so that he can click a picture and put India in a bad light internationally. So much desperation to defame India and portray it as poor.

The tone of this exchange is so revealing. I truly think an old guard of traditionally educated feds are the only reason this place hasn’t collapsed into turbo chud hell. Imagine what it would look like if these people weren’t lying to Trump’s team to keep them from breaking shit
‼️ BREAKING: Kash Patel wanted FBI staff to run an influence campaign on X by replying to Epstein tweets with bureau stats. He then asked his spokesman to reply to IfindRetards' post, saying it had gotten 277k responses. His spokesman corrected him: it had 277k views and just 400 replies. He also warned that engaging "would look bad on you."

Grothendieck graced mathematics with the idyllic landscape of "sheaves," "stacks," "germs," "étale," "motives," and "topoi." Tao introduced "digestion", processing a heap of degenerate fluff and slop into something firm and tangible; evocative of the industrial American diet.

As Von Neumann said about Oppenheimer’s performative angst over the atomic bomb: “Some people profess guilt to claim credit for the sin.”
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.
