The higher risk of premature death was true for both serum and genetically determined vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D deficiency can be corrected with a D3 supplement. For each 1,000 IU vitamin D serum levels increase ~ 5-10ng/ml. A good range is 40-60ng/ml.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a 25% higher risk of premature death.
People with vitamin D deficiency also had higher death rates from cancer and particularly respiratory diseases.
Very relevant as ~30% of US population is vitamin D deficient (serum <20ng/ml).
