Very fun to present this demo to colleagues, and to the general public! Thanks for the #SciComm opportunity @ecvp_
How do we perceive the achromatic (grayscale) color of objects in our environment? In our #ECVP2024 demo, we showed how slight variations in local and global surface properties, change our perception of two identical gray targets tremendously. Thanks to everyone who stopped by!

Tomorrow, I'll be presenting data and computational modeling to go with (some of) these stimuli. Even for these simple, achromatic, displays brightness is a complex, nonlinear interaction between local luminance, and global context capture #ECVP

When your friends psychophysics experiment is harder than you thought
I said I was down for any number of *trials* bro. This is clearly a fucking tribulation.

Why do almost no papers release code, datasets, info on replication, final models, or any combination of these? I thought for science to work results had to be reproducible and verified. Really not scientific and I don't know why academia accepts this

This is not science. Tetrachromacy does not confer super vision, paintings by a tetrachromat will not appear more colorful to a trichromat, and the genetic explanation is BS. theguardian.com/society/2022… @bronwyn_adcock

Ever wondered about all those organizations and infrastructures working at the European level on research policy and support? I created this (CC-BY) overview, maybe handy for you as well: tinyurl.com/euroresearch

1/8 Yesterday the @UNESCO delegates unanimously accepted 41c/22, the open science recommendation document. That is a landmark as it makes open science a more global endeavour en.unesco.org/science-sustai…. But what is it about? There is quite a lot in there. A short thread to recap.

Come listen to me and @LSchmittwilken talk brightness perception, computational models of the human visual system, and how/whether we can make the two meet! (Free to attend, but registration required)
Join us Oct 12 for our second Vision and Color Data Blast! We have another line-up of great speakers from 12:30-2:30 PM ET. For abstracts & to register: osafallvisionmeeting.org/pro…

This is now also published (OA) in @SciReports 🎉 bringing about 4 years (from my first working on this project) to a close nature.com/articles/s41598-0… doi.org/10.1038/s41598-021-9…
New preprint up on @BioRXiv! Stimulating intrinsically-photosensitive retinal ganglion cells quite a bit did not result in changes to perceptual sensitivity in the classical cone pathway (beyond some false positives). doi.org/10.1101/2021.07.08.4…

This by no means settles the question of interaction between ipRGC and cone pathways -- but it does put limits on how large an effect could be under these conditions.

Many thanks again to co-authors Briana Haggerty, @GKAguirre and David Brainard; thanks also to the reviewers and @SciReports for a speedy and smooth process; and to @deal_projekt for making it possible to publish this work #openaccess sans cost to us!
