This is increasingly (for me) the most relevant chart for understanding UK vs US macro. 2/3rds of US household wealth sits in financial assets. In the UK, just 1/3rd. If there is a large, positively correlated asset price correction then US consumption spending is likely to see an outsized hit. But the recent history of Britons pouring free cash flow into low return assets (cash & property) has been a UK growth headwind.

On the day that 10-year gilts hit an 18-year high, Cabinet ministers were told that 'cutting costs of essentials like childcare and mortgages' was one of their three priorities. But there are few signs the govt understands what is making mortgages more expensive (1/?)

Starmer and Reeves are not kidding when they say this political uncertainty causes economic damage. The only “reset” being achieved at the moment is higher borrowing costs. Result? We’re all worse off. So deeply depressing.

NEW: B.1617.2 is fuelling a third wave in the UK, with not only cases but also hospital admissions rising. Vaccines will make this wave different to those that have come before, but it remains a concern, and one that other countries will soon face. Thread on everything we know:

Now THIS is a lot 🤯 There has to be a public enquiry about this cost and about the PPE debacle.
Staggering number buried in today’s #COVID19 winter plan: Test & Trace will cost an extra £7bn, so £22bn total this yr. To put that into perspective, that’s more than the ENTIRE cost of Crossrail (£18bn) or the Channel Tunnel (£9bn at the time, just under £20bn in today’s money).
Investment Manager David Henry and Head of Fixed Income Research, Richard Carter discuss the rise in Covid-19 cases and what this might mean for markets. Head of Risk, Phil Thomas joins us to discuss trends in fraud, and tips for staying safe online bit.ly/3kGTJqy

I have responded in good faith to Margaret. I do hope we are not too late to help people like her, so unfairly manipluated and discombobulated by cynical social media messaging driven by dark forces.
