It’s not rainy and grey - it’s the height of summer ā˜€ļø I’m still here in Italy with my favourites and our roof hasn’t revealed a big, leaky hole the insurance company won’t cover. Oh look, here’s Dougray Scott at my door with a biscoff cheesecake!

Beauty creams love advertising retinol this, hyaluronic that. Remember when they used to tout BOSWELOX? Actually seriously called it boswelox. Which turned out to do nothing, prophetically.

Minimum wage in 2005 was £5.05 an hour. A Freddo cost 10p. One hour of work bought you 50 Freddos. In 2026, minimum wage is £12.71 and a Freddo is 39p. One hour of work now buys you just 32 Freddos. So despite minimum wage more than doubling, your Freddo buying power has fallen by 36%. If wages had actually kept pace with Freddo inflation, minimum wage would be £19.65 an hour today. Forget economists. Forget politicians. The Freddo has just delivered the most depressing cost of living graph you'll ever see.

šŸ“¢Good news! šŸ“¢ Our latest research shows a modest upturn in children and young people's reading engagement in 2026. This is positive, but we must keep going to embed reading into their everyday lives. Find out more about the work we're doing: literacytrust.org.uk/reading…

we live on a planet where trees warn each other of danger through a fungal network. Where octopuses dream. Where elephants return to the bones of the deceased and stand over them in silence. Where bees use dance to communicate where to fly and where the flower is. Where crows remember the faces of people who were cruel to them and pass this memory to their children. Where ants build cities. Where cats purr at a frequency that accelerates the healing of bones. Where, after a forest fire, the first thing the earth does is grow flowers.

The pram though? Festooned with serpents? I have questions.
As did their library. Wouldn’t mind a room like this.

Chatsworth’s House of Stories has rare books on display. I’m a sucker for a spredge so these marbled edge 1850s editions of Shakespeare & Milton caught my eye.

Today @SapereBooks publish the first in my salty new series of maritime adventures, Tenacious. I may have been trying to rewrite "24" set on a ship in the 1770s... For a limited time the ebook version is at a pretty nifty discount too: getbook.at/TenaciousNB
