But ‘Brent’ doesn’t deliver @chigrl - it’s just a pricing instrument. Today the blend is actually BFOE (Brent Forties Osseberg Ekofisk and actually WTI Midland!) and probably a few other pricing streams. Really not a benchmark anymore. Imagine pricing your LNG cargoes against this !?
If there is confusion, this is what Jeff is refering to with physically deliverable contracts trading substantially higher then ICE Brent

There is very little/ no ‘Brent Crude’ in Brent anymore. Production is almost nil
Jeff Currie Calls Brent ‘Vibe Contract’ Out of Step With Energy The world’s most important oil benchmark has become little more than a “vibe contract,” blunting its usefulness as a tool to manage price volatility, according to Wall Street veteran Jeff Currie. “Everything associated with energy is going up but Brent,” Currie said Thursday in an interview on Bloomberg Television. “It is not connected to the real world anymore.” As the global backdrop deteriorates, Brent’s disconnect from physical markets is creating “unpriceable risk,” Currie said, deterring hedgers from using the contract to protect themselves at a juncture when they need it most. “Those futures markets are absolutely critical to the function of an industry in modern society,” Currie said. “You take away that pricing, you don’t get adequate investment, you don’t get adequate behavioral changes.” (Bloomberg)

It’s the revenge of the old economy, 2026 edition. That was one of my gambits when I joined David Szybunka at Canoe Financial's CEO Series in Banff to discuss why the next commodity supercycle could be more disruptive than the last. I argued that the conditions for a sudden rotation from tech into the old economy are in place, which could be compounded by the breakdown of the post-war global order. We're witnessing a structural shift driven by deglobalisation, electrification, but investors remain fixated on the asset-light economy. The AI revolution may be here to stay, but what fuels AI? It’s bits and atoms. There is no asset-light economy without energy, metals and physical infrastructure. Huge thanks to David for his phenomenal job as host, and for those who attended the talk.

Russell Robertson, chief business development officer at @abaxx_exchange , highlighted the interest in critical minerals, particularly in lithium carbonate which is offered as an internationally delivered contract on Abaxx and is benchmarked in China on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange. “While the China Securities Regulatory Commission is internalising products, the biggest challenge remains how to move dollars around and whether international participants want to use the RMB,” he said. With the Middle East conflict, there has been continued disruption in price discovery for oil, energy and critical minerals. “Coupled with rising commodity consumption, investors will buy at a price that’s relevant,” he said. “China has the opportunity to become a controller in price, especially given the change in commodity flow and pricing where buyers are looking more towards the East for price discovery.” @abaxx_tech fow.com/insights/china-shift…

You can have that one, @annmarie.  It’s a vibe contract with the vibe set in Washington. The reason it’s a vibe contract is that ICE Brent never touches a wet barrel. Instead it converges to a futures contract on Dated Bent and is cash settled, making it a derivative on a derivative. Whether Washington sold barrels is irrelevant, it is the undenied threat that matters here because it has become unpriceable risk that discourages market participants which has caused a sharp decline in open interest, creating this disconnect with reality. As we discussed earlier, the impact goes beyond pricing. Futures markets exist to help participants hedge risk and guide them on investments. When those signals become distorted, hedging becomes harder, hedgers become hesitant and physical scarcity can worsen. Washington may be focused on keeping the screen price down, but that doesn’t solve the physical shortage. It makes it worse in the end.
First time I’ve heard Brent described as a “vibe contract”

This weekend, our family experienced an unimaginable tragedy. My brother-in-law, Fed, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind my sister and their three amazing boys. There are no words to describe the heartbreak of losing a husband, a partner, and a father so suddenly. In the midst of trying to process this devastating loss, my sister is now facing the overwhelming reality of navigating life as a solo parent and a single-income household, all while helping her boys cope with the loss of their dad. No family should have to face this kind of heartbreak, and no one should have to worry about how they will manage financially while trying to put the pieces of their lives back together. We are asking for your help in supporting my sister and her boys during this incredibly painful and uncertain time. Any donation, no matter the amount, will help ease some of the financial burden and allow them the time and space they need to grieve, heal, and begin navigating this new reality. If you are unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser and keeping our family in your thoughts means more than you know. Thank you for showing up for my sister and my nephews when they need it most. Our family is heartbroken, but we are so grateful for the love and support surrounding them during this unimaginable time. gofundme.com/f/support-the-l…
