CORAL REEF RESEARCH NEWS: Shallow waters and fast currents boost Elkhorn Coral restoration
phys.org/news/2025-01-shallo…
To help rare elkhorn corals survive in Florida waters, coral researchers should place them in shallow ocean locations with fast currents, scientists at the University of Miami NOAA Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies and the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science explained in a paper, "Reef site and habitat influence effectiveness of Acropora palmata restoration and its microbiome in the Florida Keys" published on November 11, 2024, in Communications Earth & Environment.
This new insight offers valuable guidance for coral restoration efforts, since elkhorn coral colonies are a key reef-building species throughout Florida and the Caribbean. They play a crucial role in providing structural support to reefs and habitat for many reef species due to their complex branch-like shape.

CORAL REEF BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY: Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Looking to get qualified?
scripps.ucsd.edu/research/to…
The coral reef biology and ecology field with Scripps Institution of Oceanography focuses on understanding the biological and ecological characteristics of coral reefs across the world. Potential undergraduate students interested in this topic may want to apply for the marine biology undergraduate major. Potential graduate student would want to consider the biological oceanography program or the marine biology program.

The worst is happening. Spot fires are jumping a mile+ downwind and it quickly becomes its own inferno. Evacuations are happening and traffic is gridlocked. Structures are burning

Reefs are the foundation of ocean ecosystems, providing homes for fish like this orange filefish (Aluterus schoepfii) spotted in our coral nursery! 🪸 We’re focused on rebuilding coral reefs to support thriving, sustainable marine life. #CoralRestoration

Even the ocean’s toughest corals can’t do it alone. They need all of us—supporters, scientists, & ocean advocates—to stand with them and fuel their recovery.

Adult Blue Tangs (Acanthurus coeruleus) are always blue, but their juveniles are yellow. However, some juveniles stay yellow for several months, while others change into their blue coloration weeks after settling on the reef. One thing is certain though, both are beautiful!

Coral nurseries, like this one at the Little Cayman Hope Spot, are used to grow and propagate corals, in hopes they can be "planted" onto a reef, thus helping coral conservation and health!

Juvenile Yellowtail Damselfish (Microspathodon chrysurus) are always a challenge to photograph. They live in habitats of high complexity and swim very fast in and out of cracks and holes on the reef. But when you get a good shot, you can see that they are simply stunning.
