Love this! What do you think for PVD, @NoraBarre1?

I have thought about this very idea but didn't know it had a name! How about this for our commercial corridors in RI? What do you think, @seth_zeren @rhodyneighbors?
Second Street Housing: Living next to, but not on top of main street. While most US/Canadian apartments are built on busy streets (Corridor zoning), we ought to look at next street over. alfredtwu.medium.com/second-… 1/

Scientific American says KIDS MUST PLAY. But "Only 10 % of U.S. schools let people into their playgrounds when school's out, the Trust for Public Land found." Open 'em up & 5.2 million more kids get access. Also: Renormalize unsupervised play! @sciam @LetGrowOrg @tpl_org

Good Read: “Let the kids play in the dirt, climb on the rocks & even add some wood logs to the mix so they can get even more creative.” How to design the perfect (and actually more “risky”) city playground. Remember, risk & hazards aren’t the same thing. theglobeandmail.com/life/hom…

The City of Pawtucket joined @CentralFalls_RI & @RIPTA_RI in accepting @GrowSmartRI Outstanding Smart Growth Project Award for the Pawtucket-Central Falls Transit Hub. The hub has already had a positive impact on both cities & we look forward to seeing what else it brings!

One of the most effective ways to relieve loneliness is to create opportunities for social connection in the environment. We need more pleasant & accessible public places, more third places like coffee shops close to home, & more social life overall. It is a public health matter.
NEW: Today, I released a Surgeon General's Advisory on the epidemic of loneliness and isolation facing our country, the destructive impacts it has on our collective health, and the extraordinary healing power of our relationships. Surgeongeneral.gov/lonelines… #Connect2Heal 1/8

Not just in design - I'm finding that the most important things related to improving the social and economic well being of communities are also difficult to explain with words (or words that can effectively convey their importance!)
The things that matter most for design are often hard to describe and get ignored, while things that don't matter at all are often easy to describe and therefore get all the attention. A shorter version of a piece I wrote republished by Happy Cities.
