In the 1990s, RIPTA Schedule Clerks fine-tuned the system's thousands of bus trips by boarding buses and gathering rider data, which they recorded in handmade leather books like this one. 📝 Celebrating 60 years, one story at a time. Read the full story: instagram.com/rideripta

Over a half century since its current bus system took hold, RIPTA is considering the possibility of building at least one light rail line — or, possibly a rapid bus line — to connect several of the state’s largest cities.

Rhode Island once had a vast network of trolleys.
Can it bring back just one?
RIPTA is considering plans to bring either a light rail or rapid bus line to connect the state’s largest cities.

RIPTA budgeted $5.2 million for diesel in FY27, based on $2.48/gallon. The national average is now $6.43.
The agency spent nearly $1.07 million on diesel in July and August as prices soar amid the U.S.-Iran war.

From @RICurrent: RIPTA uses about 2 million gallons of diesel a year, Raposo Perry said. For every $1 increase in the price of diesel, the agency must add about $2 million to its annual expenses, she added.

RIPTA's new Providence transit center is design only. No cost, no contract, no start date.
The train that already runs is the story: Providence median $581,365 vs Boston $859,431.
But cheaper isn't easier. 54.7% sold above list here vs ~30% in Boston.

I’m not against investments in the bus hub. I’m against moving voting it and privatizing it. But there’s also this: RIPTA faces a financial crisis, and there are many investments that are better uses of these funds than servicing this project’s debt.
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is moving full steam ahead with its plan to build a new transit center in the capital city.
