I keep saying it over and over and over again. Zone 2 training is NOT everything. Yet, some still don’t seem to get it. Highly glycolytic/intensity training (like Z4, LT, MLSS, FTP…) is ABSOLUTELY key for performance…After 28 years working with all kinds of athletes of all levels and sports using my zones (including Z2), I get “nailed” by some, as they think that Zone 2 is a “new concept” that I developed a couple of years ago and they still think that all I do is prescribing Zone 2 training 🤦🏻‍♂️… Some also think that zone 2 is the same for everyone and that it is only about exercising long and slow, which of course has been done from the beginning of times. Where were these people almost 30 years ago when I was doing hundreds and hundreds of lactate tests in the laboratory and in the field to athletes of all levels and sports to learn and determine training zones in order to try to prescribe exercise in a more accurate manner than the traditional “aerobic training”, “train long and slow” or train at your “anaerobic threshold”?. Or where were they 18 years ago when I started to add to lactate testing, substrate utilization testing (Fat and CHO oxidation rates in g/min) to help me define even better training zones as well as to start recommending 80-100g/h of CHO based on these measurements throughout all exercise intensities?. BTW, back then I was nailed by some nutrition scientists backing their recommended guidelines of ~35-55g/h as according to them, it was absolutely impossible and a crazy idea to take 80-100g/h in endurance events. Now, some of them travel the world going to conferences recommending that the right CHO intake is exactly 90g/h…However, nobody talks about a CHO hype… It is easy to criticize a concept or someone who is using it when you heard about it recently, are not familiar with it, or don’t understand it correctly and therefore just think it is just a hype. To me, it is not a hype as have been using Zone 2 concept (like Zones 1, 3,4,5 and 6) for almost 30 years (all my coaching career) and with all kinds of athletes, when nobody cared to talk about it back then… In this video I explain my view of how I came up with my own zones, why I decided to do it almost 30 years ago and how I see trainings zones from a bioenergetics perspective. It is just my own perspective and coaching philosophy… Of course, there are MANY training zones with their own definitions coined by multiple coaches as well as training philosophies that also work and must be respected. I just use my coaching philosophy and training zones as have worked quite well for me for almost 3 decades with all kinds of athletes of multiple sports as well as patients with chronic diseases. To those who still think that everything is about zone 2, that it is a new concept and that I “invented” endurance training, please just don’t 🙏 I suggest this recent video where I try to briefly explain 👇 m.youtube.com/watch?v=VcYyHX…

What sort of training should we do to improve VO2 Max? "Endurance training and HIT both elicit large improvements in the VO2max of healthy, young to middle-aged adults, with the gains in VO2max being greater following HIT" pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2624…
