Arkansas GOP sheriff nominee Aaron Spencer tracked down Michael Fosler, a child sex abuser out on bond, and shot him after finding his missing 13-year-old daughter in Fosler's truck. A judge dismissed the murder charge after deputies lost a dash-cam memory card. Great story by @JessPish slate.com/news-and-politics/…

Missouri has kicked this around for a while. It would make sheriffs harder to abolish, harder to remove from office, and give a pretextual excuse to sue the state for laws.

Stocks is serving three consecutive life sentences. His only recourse now is clemency from the governor of Arkansas. A court did not consider his abuse, and the extent of what Walls did was not known.

The sheriff election is about one man, yes, but also about the pain of unresolved trauma in a community.

Incredible reporting by the Wall Street Journal on how the Department of Homeland Security gives local police departments as much as $2 million for each immigration arrest through its 287(g) program: wsj.com/us-news/immigration-…

After working on this off-and-on for two years, my article “A Short History of Nazi-Satanism” is finally out in the new issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Right Wing Studies! You can download the PDF below (and apologies for the annoying captcha). escholarship.org/uc/item/1f5…

I, once again, asked Miami’s Mayor Eileen Higgins and city commissioners to end the 287g agreement signed last year establishing local police collaboration with ICE. Higgins campaigned on this issue but now refuses to address it, and won’t even meet with groups advocating on it.

Her son had to ditch a college football scholarship to take care of his family after Tarrant County charged a Black women for voting while on supervised release and sentenced Crystal Mason to five years in prison. Her vote never counted. Election workers didn't spot that she was ineligible to vote and gave her a provisional ballot. Meanwhile a white man from Delaware, who registered his dead mother to vote for Trump in the 2020 election, got .... *checks notes* five years probation. phillyvoice.com/voter-fraud-…
Breaking news: The nearly decade-long case of Crystal Mason, a Black Texas woman who was sentenced to five years in prison in a controversial illegal voting case will end with an acquittal, the state’s highest criminal court said on Thursday. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…

THREAD. Did you know that Minneapolis police deployed 101 personnel to a 7-person vigil held one morning at Renee Good's memorial? The cops generated $1.92 million in overtime cash for themselves.

The predictable result of bipartisan discourse promoting a good/bad immigrant dichotomy coupled w/ bipartisan expansion of the detention and deportation regime. As @silkys13 says: "If you accept that some people deserve such treatment, they'll expand who's deserving"
The problem is that for years, people have treated Trump's words as a buffet, picking and choosing which parts of them they want to believe and which parts they think are puffery. And with "mass deportation," IMHO most people heard "deport the criminals" and ignored the rest.

while so many people fixated on the man who refused to acquit Lindsay Clancy, Georgia is set to kill Stacey Humphreys tomorrow night, despite the “extreme juror misconduct” that got him the death penalty in the first place. theintercept.com/2026/09/15/…

An unusual moment in policing is taking shape: police unions, civil rights groups, conservative politicians and grassroots activists find themselves in an unlikely alliance calling for rapidly expanding surveillance tech to be reined in. A “tipping point,” says @ProfFerguson.
Resistance to Flock has made its way to the DMV. In Washington, the head of the city police union said MPD used the cameras to investigate sworn officers. And officials in Alexandria signaled this week they don’t want Flock in their city. w/ @conarck washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/…
