The EU could deny new member states the right to veto foreign policy and other decisions requiring unanimity.
The no-veto clause could be written into Montenegro's accession treaty, which would serve as a template for others.

The shocking story of the tiny children taken from their mothers in Belgium's colonies because they were mixed race.
Now five women have taken the Belgian government to court, alleging crimes against humanity.

The depressing thing is that they were just as bad before social media.
China must face ‘higher cost’ for backing Russia - the Kaja Kallas hearing.

Agree, all pre-cooked in advance and too many MEPs want their Q to be a mini speech. Very little collegiality even within the same group.
The Kaja Kallas hearing was a missed opportunity, as these sessions are. So many repetitive questions from MEPs, almost no follow ups, so the person at the front repeats their talking points. Not a criticism of KK, but the hearings don't work as they should do.
Kaja Kallas references historian Timothy Snyder in her hearing with MEPs. "In order for a country to become better it has to lose its last colonial war." The EU has to do everything to ensure "Russia loses its last colonial war".
Congratulations from Olaf Scholz, Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen, following victory for Maia Sandu in Moldova's elections. Silence from Viktor Orbán.

Misaligned stars: the European Union has an expensive and esp politically-charged agenda for the next five years, but lacks strong national leaders to carry it forward.

Remember the Franco-German letter calling for an EU-UK migration pact?
Although commission confirmed to me last week having got it, they now say it has not been "formally received". As @beanavarro reports Germany has not yet signed off the letter.

Thank you Lili! It's a been a pleasure and I'm looking forward to reading what you do next.
As we reported in July an EU-UK summit has been pencilled in for Spring 2025.
The summit would be between Keir Starmer and leaders of the EU institutions, rather than the EU27.
Nearly nine years after EU leaders announced the trust fund for Africa with big fanfare, there is a risk that some of the money could fall into the hands of human rights abusers, says a quietly damning report from the EU's official spending watchdog.
