Tomorrow will be my last day as a Division I Athletic Trainer (probably ever) and my Sunday scaries have got me doing a lot of reflecting on how I got to this point #ATtwitter 🧵

To the toxic adults in youth sports; Remember giving them a complex about their appearance, paralleling their worth with excelling in sport, or placing so much soul crushing pressure to be good you forgot they were human? That's why 3 athletes committed suicide in 7 weeks.

Dear athletes, PLEASE know the ATR is always a safe space for your mental health. Please. I'm begging you to talk to someone if you need to.

The results of the most recent NATA Salary Survey are very discouraging. There is ZERO reason why the average salary for a male AT is over $11,000 more than a female AT. This is unjustifiable. According to the NATA, 55% of members identify as female. This is Women dominant field!

My job is not to take kids off the field, it’s to keep them on it SAFELY. If it’s possible for my athletes to play through an injury relatively safely we’ll find a way together. If I do pull a kid I did it because I’m concerned for their long-term health and you should be too.

So frustrated trying to find a job in the profession I love. We shouldn’t have to sacrifice a living wage, benefits, and our mental health just to work in our field. A masters degree level of education and loan debt, just to be looking at jobs at target that will pay me more.

Pretty incredible the Portage girls basketball team lost three impact players to knee injuries and still won a District 6 Class 1A title. Everyone up and down the roster contributed in elevated roles. The Mustangs exhibited endless grit and heart over the season.

Target is raising wages to $24 an hour in some locations and we’re requiring ATs to have a masters for $18 an hour.

Short staffed.
12+ hour work days.
Crappy pay.
Traveling with your team because there will be no hosting AT at an away event.
Should I give more reasons as to why ATs are leaving the profession?
