Iran’s position is actually quite simple. Tehran is interested in returning to the Memorandum of understanding which received broad support within the Iranian leadership, provided that Washington fulfills the commitments Iran believes were already agreed upon, from recognition of Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz to the release of frozen Iranian funds. Iran has no interest in an endless war. There is a clear understanding in Tehran of the importance of bringing the conflict to an end, but only through an agreement that changes the strategic reality in Iran’s favor. What Tehran is not prepared to do is renegotiate the agreement from scratch. Iran will not negotiate new terms for the Memorandum of understanding. It will not reopen nuclear negotiations before the memorandum is restored. And it will not offer additional concessions beyond those it already made during its negotiations with Washington. This position is unlikely to change simply because the United States increases military or economic pressure. From Tehran’s perspective, additional pressure does not create a new negotiating baseline; it reinforces the argument that Washington must first honor the understandings already reached. The bottom line is straightforward: Iran wants an end to the war, but it does not intend to negotiate the price of ending it twice. As simple as that. #IranWar‌
