True story. Sean would challenge all of us. The question about being coached hard was rhetorical because he was gonna do that anyways. He was a lot tougher on me though because he knew things came easy to me and I got bored. Didn’t bother me at all because we’d go back and forth talkin shit. He always knew when it was time to lock in I was ready though 😂. Forever grateful for you brutha @SeanPayton
Sean Payton reveals the late night text exchange he had with Alvin Kamara after watching him coast through a practice, and explains how he challenged him to raise his standards if he really wanted to make the Hall of Fame
“I text Alvin one night, Kamara, and he’s one of my favorite players, right? And it was a Wednesday. He had a tendency, he was so gifted, he could get bored. And then if he got bored, he might drop an easy pass.”
“And he had one of those Wednesdays. In season, Wednesday is the first day of practice. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. And it was just a nonchalant day, and yet for someone who was so elite.”
“I text him that night and I said, ‘Hey, I want to ask you a question. Can I coach you hard?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, why are you tripping?’ And I said, ‘Well, look, we’ll talk about it tomorrow.’”
“And then, you know, it bothered him a little because he had to go to sleep. And then the next day he sees me in pre-practice, and I said, ‘Just let me explain this. Do you see yourself being in the Hall of Fame someday?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’”
“And I said, ‘All right. Well, I don’t think your trajectory right now is steep enough to make that goal happen. I think your trajectory is five Pro Bowls, a couple All-Pro teams, phenomenal career, all-time leading rusher, but I think your trajectory, and I think your practices have to be.. And then he starts complaining to me, and I said, ‘I thought you told me I could coach you hard.’ And then, you know, it hit him.”

Always ready to learn: understanding the learning biographies of expert academy football coaches
🔗 Open access in next post
In this paper, we explored how expert Premier League academy coaches develop over time, focusing on the experiences that have shaped their learning.
Our findings point toward the importance of informal, day-to-day learning. Across their careers, these coaches consistently:
• reflect critically on their practice
• develop a clear sense of purpose
• learn through others (both positive and negative influences)
• draw on a wide range of lived experiences
What stands out is how much learning happens in the everyday — through conversations, observation, considered experimentation, and making sense of daily experiences.
Overall, expertise seems to develop over time through an ongoing ability to adapt, grounded in reflection and experience. Hopefully this adds something useful to ongoing conversations around coach development and learning.

After seeing so much recent commentary on coaching performance from a distance, this article is a reflection on why coaching is so much easier to judge from the stand than do on the pitch
Thank you to @RTEBrainstorm for covering work from the Co-Ex|Lab: School of Health and Human Performance
Why coaching is easier to judge from the stand than do on the pitch. What fans, onlookers and spectators think coaching involves often bears little resemblance to the job itself, explains @Jattaylor @shhp_dcu @DCU rte.ie/brainstorm/2026/0324/…
