‼️Extra cost of being disabled in UK to rise by almost 12% in five years ‼️
The new @scope Disability Price Tag published today
Cuts to PIP will leave disabled people with no financial support to live independently

There’s a lot of talk of getting people in work.
But
From the 100k+ jobs on the DWPs jobs site…
Just 480 are remote
Only 29 are remote & Disability Confident
That’s what’s facing disabled people.
We must tackle the barriers employers put up. Not just demand more of people.
Having extra costs is not a consideration on which eligibility is currently based...nor can you quantify what you have to 'go without' because you can't afford it
1 in 6 PIP claimants confess they have no extra disability costs.
That's why @Conservatives will shift from cash to support for people with milder conditions.
Taxpayer-funded help should go to those who need it most - to live with dignity, and to work if you can.
Not what the research found

A fair chance at a future shouldn’t be a fairy tale. But for too many young disabled people, that’s exactly what it feels like.
Today, we joined the Disability Charities Consortium in writing an open letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
Absolutely not ‘often’. It would require an incredibly specific set of circumstances in the household and not true of most disabled claimants!
‘There’s no incentive to work!’
@JoeShalam tells @NickFerrariLBC that Brits on benefits can often earn more than people working full-time.

Employment support that is free from fear and sanctions produces better outcomes. Good to see DWP are announcing this tomorrow. Many young disabled people want to work but are being let down let’s hope this changes that

#GMB: "Nearly half of disabled young adults have had a request for reasonable adjustments in the workplace rejected. Research from Scope UK concluded employer.. lack of support.. frequently drives disabled young people out of work completely"

Andy Burnham described “the fair and sustainable way to bring the welfare bill down" in his 1st speech as prime minister today.
New @jrf_uk analysis shows why tackling underlying problems with jobs, health & housing, not “crude cuts”, would be a popular & lasting approach. 1/10

ALT Quote from Andy Burnham's first speech as prime minister: "We will help more young people into work by changing the education system and giving them more support, more mental health support. And we will build more council homes. That is the fair and sustainable way to bring the welfare bill down, to meet our fiscal rules, and to honour our commitments on defence to our international partners."
I post this one a year. Today feels apt.

Repeat:
PIP is NOT an unemployment or out of work benefit
Disabled people IN work can claim PIP.
It is there to reflect the inequality disabled face in society

🚨 NEW: PIP is set to undergo major reform after a Government review found it's not fit for purpose
It found assessments can be so "dehumanising" that they drive some claimants out of work and having a social life
Timms Review findings out. 'PIP not fit for purpose'.
Perhaps nothing new, and proof will be whatever comes next. This is an opportunity to reform how PIP works to support disabled people. I hope the DWP, & the co-producers grab it.

Milburn's interim report reflects what we hear @TrussellUK from young people at risk of turning to food banks: they're being let down by the labour market & systems that should support them, like health & education. They tell us low income from wages and social security...1/3
'We've got to reset the whole system'
Former minister Alan Milburn told #BBCBreakfast the education, health and welfare systems are "no longer fit for purpose" in preparing young people for adult life as he warned the number of 16 to 24-year-olds out of work, education or training set to rise to 1.25 million by 2031, unless 'urgent' action is taken
