This really is nonsensical. Claims £14bn could be raised by increasing CGT to income tax rates.
HMRC estimates that a 10% increase in CGT would *cost* £3.5bn. Exact magnitude can be disputed, but it sure as heck wouldn't raise close to £14bn.

The sheer scale of electricity transmission buildout planned is quite something when you see it on a map.
Around 2,200 miles of upgrades to existing lines. A further 4,200 miles of brand new lines - onshore and offshore. In just 15 years, if it all runs to plan.

Heartbroken to hear my friend Sir Billy Boston has died.
Billy was one of the greatest Rugby League players of all time but also one of the kindest and most down-to-earth people you could ever wish to meet.
He always had time for people and gave so much to back to his adopted home, Wigan.
I will miss him greatly and am thinking today of Billy’s family, still grieving the recent loss of his beloved wife Joan.
A giant of a man in every way.
Thank you, Billy, and rest in peace.

The defence row exposes Labour’s fiscal dilemma.
Rachel Reeves is simply doing her job. John Healey resigned honourably.
The buck stops with the Prime Minister. Before he goes, he should abandon Labour’s tax pledge and face hard choices on welfare and pensions.

Today is the 33rd anniversary of the day the IRA bombed Warrington town centre and killed my son Tim and 3 yr old Johnathan Ball. Words can never describe how losing a child leaves a huge hole in your heart and your family. Eternal love Tim ❤️❤️

Young people in Britain have been consistently looked over by politicians over recent years, who favour older generations they deem more likely to vote.
The pensions triple lock was introduced to tackle pensioner poverty. It's worked - pensioner are now less likely to be poor than working age adults or children in Britain.
It's all reflected in the stats:
- At age 30, Brits born in the 1980s earned on average 8% less than people born in the 1970s
- Graduate pay for those aged 30-34 has fallen by 16% between 2007 and 2023
- Homeownership among 30-34 year olds has fallen by over 20 percentage points between 1986 and 2021
All of this is contributing to a yawning intergenerational wealth gap.
Which makes the student loan situation even more infuriating – extortionate interest rates at RPI + 3% (at one point exceeding 7%), successive governments that froze the repayment threshold and dragged more graduates into more payments
None of this is the fault of older generations. But I argue in my latest @thetimes column that it is no longer them who need the government's help.
Reform of student loans might cost a few billion pounds a year, as estimated by @TheIFS. But consider that the pensions triple lock is estimated to cost £15.5 billion a year by 2029/2030. Is reform of student loans to help the young really so much to ask?

Pichot spot on. There has been a disease at the centre of rugby governance and there is nowhere near enough outrage from fans to help drive the change needed to save the game from itself.
Explosive interview with Gus Pichot for @MailSport (by @Nik_Simon88 and I) on lack of growth in rugby, danger posed by Nations League, attempts by officials to block his involvement and how failing authorities lack vision. dailymail.co.uk/sport/rugbyu…
