Wyatt the Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle reached a new personal best altitude of 1950 m the other day. Using the thermal updraft he gained up to 4.5 m/sec in height. #wedgetailedeagle 🦅

Fine‐scale spatial risk models to predict avian collisions with power lines

Our study illustrates a framework for using bird movement data to provide insights into avian behaviour and the risk they encounter around power line infrastructure. Electricity delivery industries...

Stoked to have a cover photo for @EcographyJourna! In our paper doi.org/10.1111/ecog.07421 we included temporal dynamics into SSFs, resulting in daily patterns of movement and habitat selection. Simulating then gave us dynamic spatial predictions Code! github.com/swforrest/dynamic…

And thats a wrap for PhD fieldwork! Four seasons of surveys, nest monitoring, and tagging birds has come to an end with our last juvenile tagged this morning for our survival study. On to analysing data and writing up findings! Hopefully they can help support this species

For years, we've been tracking the movements of the Red Goshawk, Australia’s rarest bird of prey. And recently, one flew +1350km to the arid zone, Marion Downs! This is a bird that lives in the tropical forests of Northern Australia... or so we thought! 📷B Leue, S Cherriman/AWC

new paper: "Great Gray Owls hunting voles under snow hover to defeat an acoustic mirage" was just published! royalsocietypublishing.org/d… In it, we ask: how does great gray owl hunt thru snow? Part of the answer is this enormous facial disc they have (largest of any owl species)

New paper- authors.elsevier.com/a/1fqaG… We present an approach for predicting where animals perform different behaviours. Using data from Tasmanian #wedgetailedeagles we map where perching, short and long flights are likely to occur, which can help manage this endangered population.

Wedge-tailed eagles gather for vulture act in stunning photo

Australia does not have vultures, but a Tasmanian bird watcher's photograph shows they are willing to take the role on.
