Our short film "Red Goshawks - Lifting the Veil" is now live! Filmmaker Braydon Moloney followed us around during the 2021 breeding season and captured our efforts to better understand and conserve this unique raptor species #Documentary #RedGoshawk youtu.be/VYUJspD6v_Q?si=VN_d…

New paper out on the spatial ecology of Australia’s rarest bird of prey — the Endangered #RedGoshawk. Using GPS tracking, we examined home ranges, habitat selection, and responses to clearing, restoration, fire & other environmental conditions. A 🧵: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

In mining landscapes on Cape York Peninsula, Red Goshawks avoided cleared and restored habitats. Existing 200–300 m nest buffers imposed by regulators protects <1% of the average breeding home range, highlighting the need to consider habitat protection at much larger scales.

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge our co-author Dr David Stewart, who sadly passed away before publication. David helped tag our first Red Goshawk >10 years ago and continued helping me throughout my PhD. It means a lot to see this work published with his name on it. Vale Dave.

New publication! The Letter-winged Kite (Elanus scriptus) is the world's only nocturnal member of the Accipitridae and one of Australia's least-known raptors. We investigated long-term range and abundance trends using 60 years of occurrence records. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

Our analyses indicate that the Letter-winged Kite has undergone a substantial contraction in distribution over recent decades, with periodic irruptions beyond its core range in Australia's eastern arid zone occurring with declining frequency and magnitude.

Based on the available evidence, we recommend that the species be reassessed and listed as Vulnerable under the EPBC Act. #LetterWingedKite #Raptors #Conservation #raptorresearch

So can BFDV be implicated in the Red Goshawks widespread decline and range loss? We’re not sure. Parrot populations have increased in its former range areas including known virus carriers which they prey upon. However, without any historical evidence this remains circumstantial.
