The people saying he’s too old to be making music like this, will also hit 30 one day and realise they were talking absolute shite.

ARTICLE 🚨🚨🚨 Dolly Parton was one of those people you felt would live forever. Much of the shock of her passing comes from the realisation that she is human & not immortal like her legacy surely will be. Her death is a reminder that the great legends of music history won’t be around forever & should be appreciated while they’re still here. Sadly this isn’t always the case, & nothing makes my blood boil more than when people sneer at older artists for not sounding as good as they used to. TikTok clips of legendary older musicians are often bombarded with negative comments telling the singer that it’s time to give it up. But if you’re going to see AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, or Paul McCartney in 2026, you’re not going for a perfectly delivered vocal performance. You’re going to witness living legends in the flesh. The songs they wrote gave birth to new genres of music & every artist today is relying on the foundations they built. There will always be great songwriters & musicians who can blow us away with something completely new. But the great pioneering artists of the 20th century will still be talked about in the 22nd. Last year Ozzy Osbourne battled ill health to put on one last show in front of a packed Villa Park. Ozzy sat down for his performance & relied on the crowd to help him with notes he just couldn’t reach. But it goes without saying that not one of the 42,000 people at that gig would have traded that experience for the world when Ozzy passed away just two weeks later. Social media has made live music far more accessible, but at what cost? A concert used to be experienced by those lucky enough to get a ticket. Or maybe through a professionally made TV recording. Now they can be live streamed, clipped and viewed by anyone. But the magic of attending a live performance by a great musician is not something that can be captured while sitting on the sofa in your underpants. This is why comment sections can be breeding grounds for talentless arseholes who are at great pains to tell you that this particular singer is “past it.” There is also undeniably a misogynistic edge to the way people online talk about older musicians. Nobody would dare question Angus Young for parading around the stage in his schoolboy uniform at 71. Quite rightly too, it’s fucking awesome. But the likes of Joan Jett, Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper, & Madonna are subjected to intense scrutiny of their outfits & how they’ve aged before they’ve even picked up the mic. In a 1989 interview, Cyndi Lauper spoke about ageing. “Girls just wanna have fun didn’t come out until I was 30. I never told anybody how old I was. I would say to them whenever they asked me, what do you think I am? Some kind of car? What do you wanna do? Pick up the hood, check the mileage & kick the tires? You can’t get into that mindset.” Yet still, when it comes to legendary female artists, many on social media seem determined to tear them apart for their appearance or their current ability compared to their peak. In 1976, a 36-year-old Tina Turner left her abusive husband & embarked on a solo career, working cleaning jobs during the day & performing at cabaret bars at night. She was 44 before she had a major hit with Private Dancer & went on to global success hitting the peak of her fame well into her 50s. It’s difficult to imagine how this story would play out today. Social media has an effect on the way people perceive older artists in particular. A 15-second TikTok clip of a live show strips away all the emotion & magic of the experience & reduces it to a pointless judgment of how well they’ve aged & whether or not they’ve still got it. In recent years we’ve lost Bowie, Prince, George Michael, Aretha Franklin, Sinéad O’Connor, Tina Turner, Ozzy, & now Dolly Parton. So if you get the chance to see Stevie Nicks, Robert Plant or any of the other 20th century greats, you should absolutely go. But for the love of God don’t post anything on TikTok.
