I wrote a book about a group of Parthian royalty who lived at the court of the Roman emperor in the first century CE. Today, finally, it is an object in the world.

In Sasanian Iran, they associated the planets with local gods. The Sogdians adopted this. It got translated into Chinese, but the imagery was localized and the loanwords became nebulous terms traced back to the Western Regions. The Japanese then brought over the iconography.

I have an article in the new issue of Studies in Late Antiquity. It is about petitioners in ancient literature who try to pull a fast one on a king. Instead of bowing to him, they perform a fake bow by, for example, discretely dropping a ring and stooping to pick it up.
Have they in fact cheated the king out of real submission? I answer by way of Lisa Wedeen's book about how autocratic regimes use empty spectacles to cement their power.
