I had the opportunity to write this piece for The Conversation about something we often underestimate in Tourette syndrome: the extraordinary amount of effort many people expend trying to suppress their tics. People may appear relatively tic-free in a classroom, workplace, clinic or on a stage, but that outward appearance can hide an exhausting internal struggle. Suppression is not simply “stopping” a tic; it can require sustained attention, awareness of premonitory urges and enormous mental energy, and the tics may rebound later. The encouraging part is that this same ability to recognize urges and modify responses is also central to behavioral treatments such as CBIT. I have spent much of my career learning from people living with Tourette syndrome, and I continue to be reminded that what we see from the outside rarely tells the whole story. The lesson for all of us is simple: look beyond the tic, listen to the person, and recognize the effort we may not be able to see. theconversation.com/people-w…

Some forms of dystonia are acquired, resulting from identifiable non-genetic causes such as medications, stroke or brain injuries. Acquired dystonias can occur alongside other neurologic symptoms. Raise awareness by encouraging others to Ask Me About Dystonia. #dystonia #dmrf

While ongoing drought conditions have reduced river flows across North Florida, the unusually low water levels have also created a rare opportunity to locate and document two previously unknown springs along the Suwannee River. @SRWMD mainstreetdailynews.com/loca…

Billie Eilish’s Tourette isn’t fishy, it’s another reminder that science often finds clues in unexpected places. Just as we shouldn’t judge a fish by the surface of the water, we shouldn’t judge a person by what we see in a brief video. The recent conversation around Billie Eilish is a reminder that neurological conditions can be invisible. Curiosity, evidence, and compassion should always swim ahead of assumptions. boredpanda.com/billie-eilish… #billieeilish #eilish @TouretteAssn @RollingStone

We are deeply moved by former Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals running back Chris Johnson's decision to share his ALS diagnosis publicly. "ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn't changed who I am." His words are a powerful reminder that reflect the strength we see every day in the ALS community. Chris said he is choosing to fight and we are here to fight alongside him. By speaking out, Chris is helping us raise the awareness and funding needed to find treatments and, one day, a cure. Thank you for choosing to fight — not just for yourself, but for the tens of thousands of Americans living with ALS today. We are honored to walk this road alongside you. "The Case of the Golden Idol" is a point-and-click adventure game where you collect clues to solve a mystery. I figure it'd be a good model to apply to a medical mystery / education game. So I had Claude make a demo!
