This isn’t true @MccailColl. Lots of new jobs for firefighters will be also created!
It’s pretty damning that the Government’s own website admits that Jackdaw will create just *27* direct jobs.

Cannot wait for 12 days time to be put out of pre-Budget misery and have some breathing space, only to be thrown into post-Budget misery as energy bills spike in the winter.

EXCL: John Healey poised to tax Britain’s banks in his 28 October budget to help offset the damage inflicted on the public finances by war in the Middle East, the Guardian understands. The chancellor is in Bangkok, where the IMF has praised the UK’s progress towards balancing the books, urging him to “stay the course”. To keep the Treasury’s deficit reduction plans on track in the face of rising government borrowing costs, Healey is understood to have decided to tap the financial sector for additional revenue. One option understood to be under discussion – reversing cuts to the bank surcharge made by Jeremy Hunt – would raise upwards of £2bn a year. Lenders have logged strong earnings on back of rising interest rates, with UK’s four largest lenders – HSBC, NatWest, Barclays and Lloyds Banking Group – alone having generated £200bn in pre-tax profits over past five years. It’s imperative they win, as I see two possible outcomes: Scenario A) Civil Service becomes more attractive > influx of better talent > UK better Scenario B [copium]) Civil Service becomes TOO appealing > forces the private sector to adopt a 4-day work week to keep up
🚨 NEW: Civil servants will vote next week on whether to strike for a 4-day work week on full pay and a 10% pay rise

The poorest billionaire in California will make about $300 million this year. If we pass the CA wealth tax, he will only make $235 million. In exchange, millions of the poorest Californians will get health insurance. That's the tradeoff billionaires are not willing to make.

This is why the billionaire class is freaking out. Google co-founder Sergey Brin in particular has completely lost it - he has spent 102 MILLION, all to defeat a tiny tax on his ginormous fortune. It's honestly sad to see: so rich, and they still don't understand what's really scarce in life: your fucking time on this planet! Instead, this guy spends hours, days and weeks obsessing over this little tax that he'll barely notice. Pathetic.
If California’s “billionaire tax” passes, it will amount to the first time that a government in the U.S. has successfully taxed the assets, rather than the income, of extremely rich people as a class. newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

Senior Labour figures are privately voicing unease about John Healey’s approach to his crucial first budget this month, against the backdrop of volatile global markets and soaring energy costs. The chancellor’s conference speech was warmly received by Labour members - but government insiders cast doubt over lack of investment and growth policy or any pitch-rolling for possible tax rises. Narrow focus of budget expected to rule out radical changes to property and capital gains taxes - though Healey calling in bank bosses next week has reignited speculation of windfall tax. Labour MPs fear that failing to take more drastic action, particularly on surging energy prices, could leave voters nonplussed. One said: “John may want the budget to be low key but it will send a massive signal of our intent.” theguardian.com/politics/202…
