I watched The Wargame so you don’t have to (unless you’re keen on dark comedy). My latest for @jacobin.
The new docudrama “The Wargame” imagines Britain responding to a Russian military attack. Its cast is full of real-life politicians — often figures with ties to the weapons industry using the show to demand more money for the armed forces. jacobin.com/2026/10/sky-warg…

With the British gov set to approve the Jackdaw gas field, it’s worth pointing out that “ending neoliberalism” isn’t concordant with handing development of our natural resources to one of the world’s largest energy multinationals and a public company owned by a foreign state.

I had the good fortune of reading Anti-Fascist Economics over the summer. It’s a cracker — and couldn’t be more timely! Well worth your time and out today wherever you buy your books.
The wait is over… Anti-Fascist Economics is out now! 🌹🌾 Writing a book is a very lonely journey and yet no one can do it alone. I’m so, so grateful to my family and friends who have had my back throughout this process and for all the guidance from my editors across three countries and my agency. 🔗 Order the US, UK and DE editions today. A clip from my interview with @KhemRogaly on the new report he's coauthored for @TransitionSec, 'Posturing to the World: The Costs of Britain’s Global Military and Expansive Strategy'.
The doubling of Britain's military budget is partly justified in terms of the public having enjoyed a post-Cold War "peace dividend". The reality is that when the increase was announced the budget was already higher in real terms than it was in the 1980s. - @KhemRogaly

And people say the anti-war movement in Britain hasn’t been successful… This is good news, and something to build on in the coming period.
Half of Britons say there are no circumstances in which they would go to war for their country, a poll has found. Just 36 per cent said there were circumstances in which they would fight. Read our analysis to understand what these numbers suggest ⬇️ telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Sky's 'The Wargame' was an exercise in poorly executed regime stenography. But the show offered a revealing insight into the attitudes of our governing class (and what they think of the public). My review for @jacobin is linked below.

Pretty sad state of affairs for Scottish politics as most Scots have *no opinion at all* of the party leaders other than SNP Grim reading too for John Swinney - who once bragged of being the most popular politician in Scotland - as SNP conference kicks off...

Public sector reform cannot be government speak for cuts. Workers can provide an alternative. We're launching The Workers' Inquiry. We can improve our public services but that requires investment and improvements, not cuts and closures. Have your say. stuc.org.uk/news/news/the-wo…

Tory, Labour, and Scottish nationalist leaders join together to insist on the need to raise weapons spending in Sky TV’s “The Wargame.” It’s a show of elite unity in which doubtful public opinion is cast as a mere inconvenience. jacobin.com/2026/10/sky-warg…

Sky TV’s “The Wargame” shows British political leaders acting out a future war with Russia. In it, real-life politicians who backed the invasion of Iraq propose banning social media and taking over the airwaves in order to fight wartime disinformation: jacobin.com/2026/10/sky-warg…

It’s reported today that Sally Rooney, who many believe is one of the best authors of her generation, has been advised that because she has expressed support for Palestine Action she could be arrested if she comes to the UK. Because she is donating some of the money from the sale of her books to Palestine Action her publishers have been advised that they too could be prosecuted if they sell her books in any form and so they have removed them from the bookshelves and other outlets. I do not want anyone in the UK to miss out on her wonderful writing and so I thought I would read the first paragraphs of her terrific book “Normal People.” I hope others will read further sections of the book so that people do not lose out on the joy of reading h her works.
