A #bloodclot in a deep vein is a #DVT. It can break off & travel to block blood supply to the lungs = #pulmonaryembolism (PE). Together a #DVT and #PE are collectively called venous thromboembolism #VTE. #ClotChat #WTDay22
The GAB calls for dating apps to raise awareness of monkeypox. “We should avoid stigmatizing language – monkeypox is not a “gay disease” but can be transmitted through close physical contact in any sexual relationship.” Full statement from @acusigli here: #sexualhealth

Unwillingness to allow women to make decisions about their own bodies coincides with the tendency to deny women decision-making roles in the areas of political, economic, social, and cultural affairs. #regressive #UnitedStates #Abortion #AbortionIsHealthcare #roeversuswade

Laws that deny access to abortion, whatever their stated objectives, discriminate, denigrate and undermine women’s capacity to make decisions about their bodies and their lives. #regressive #UnitedStates #Abortion #AbortionIsHealthcare #prochoice #roeversuswade #USSupremecourt
Why are women half as likely to receive tranexamic acid for traumatic bleeding than men? This thought provoking article discusses the possible causes, & surprisingly suggests the most likely is unconscious gender bias among healthcare professionals medicalnewstoday.com/article…

Many VTE are preventable especially hospital associated thrombosis (HAT) Doing VTE risk assessment & giving thromboprophylaxis if necessary needs to be done in every hospital -will help @who achieve their target of reducing death due to non communicable disease #NCD Let’s do it!
1 in 4 ppl worldwide die from conditions related to #thrombosis, also known as #bloodclots. Thrombosis is a common pathology underlying ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke & venous thromboembolism (VTE). Focusing on this #NCD is essential to save lives. #EB150 #HealthForAll

Saw this when crossing the Sydney harbour bridge on Saturday night in an Uber. Can’t find anything online about a limo fire/fire on the bridge - would think I dreamt it aside from the fact I got the video

This is a big moment for all who care about patient safety. Much more to do but it is also remarkable to have got to this point
#WHA74 adopted the first ever Global #PatientSafety Action Plan 2021-2030, which envisions "a world in which no one is harmed in health care, and every patient receives safe and respectful care, every time, everywhere"; provides a 10-year roadmap & actions to realize this vision.

Love these graphics from Winton Centre explaining how the risk benefit analysis for using Astra-Zeneca COVID-19 varies depending on background COVID-19 rates. Explains why we have a 40 year old cut off (lowCOVID-19 rate) & Canada & Germany have no restrictions (high rates)

PHE data show up to 50% reduction in transmission of COVID from first vaccine. 3 implications: 1) Getting a vaccine helps protect others 2) This is likely to be improved by getting your second dose 3) If people you meet are vaccinated it reduces your risk- but not completely.

We compared COVID-19 pts vs. other viral pneumonia pts who required ECMO. -COVID-19 pts had significantly more PE & immunothrombosis & more DVT coming off ECMO... confirming what we thought: COVID-19 produces the most profound prothrombotic state of any viral pneumonia
The GSTT experience of haemostatic complications during ECMO with flu vs COVID19 - higher rates of thrombosis (particularly in the lungs) but similar rates of major bleeding #ECMO #COVID19 #clot @GSTT_ICU @bhwords @karenbr001 @spartan_fred @Luigi_ICM journals.lww.com/ccmjournal/…

Today is a great day for medical science, and the future. Congratulations and thank you to the NHS workers, trial volunteers and scientists who have made this a reality. The pandemic is not over and relaxing too early would be dangerous. But this is a significant moment.
What a great moment - Maggie, the first NHS patient to be vaccinated against COVID-19. A truly historic day here @nhsuhcw and the beginning of the end of this pandemic #ThankYouNHS #CovidVaccine
