The weeks in between Thanksgiving & Winter Break are some of my faves and here’s why: Winter Games.
Everyday we pause what we’re doing and play a short game, challenge or craft. It gives all of us (including me) a little something to look forward to during these crazy few weeks.
Read this recently & resonated with me as a teacher & human being:
What if instead of embracing the messages to “finish strong!” & get your to do list done we instead saw this month as a chance to slow down & celebrate the hard work you’ve been doing all year?
When your teacher & fellow classmate are huge Packers fans but you’re a Bears fan & after weeks of trash talk your team lost in the last three seconds by missing a field goal:
Teaching 8th grade again has been such a blast. I’m really thankful for the community at New Mark, but especially these 125 Northstars🤍

Several students from each ELA class presented their writing in front of their peers today. What a great way to wrap up our narrative unit!
I also *half jokingly* told the kids to dress in all black/ camo for our final spy mission yesterday & the first thing these girls did when they came into class today was show me their outfits🥹
These Northstars are officially done with their first SS unit & there’s no better way to celebrate all their hard work than with a final spy mission! 😎
Our field trip to Worlds of Fun was a fan fave! Students rotated between stations where they learned about the behind the scenes of an amusement park & haunted house.
PS - I only screamed on the rollercoaster & definitely not going through the haunted house with the lights on.
Ran into some Northstars *pun intended* who absolutely crushed it at their district cross country meet today!
Went on a sensory walk today in ELA to generate ideas for our writing. We have such beautiful grounds at NMMS (and it was a fun excuse to visit the ducks).
It was a B-E-A-utiful day outside… so naturally we spent it interviewing our partners in ELA for our upcoming visual biography project. Excited to see the final products and learn more about this crew.
Cheering on the Battle Spartans looks a little bit different after moving to KC, but forever will be a big fan of them.
So sweet seeing some of these amazing juniors (!!!) on Friday night at NKC HS! Good luck this season @MBHFOOTBALL 💙💛
Although I’m still adjusting to the early start of middle school, the sunrises have been a sweet treat every morning.
A little caution tape & spy music goes a long way!
Today these Northstars explored the mystery of the lost colony of Roanoke and absolutely killed it (pun intended). Such a fun way to wrap up our week examining primary & secondary sources.
My first week as a Northstar was pretty awesome, but safe to say I was ready to get into some content today. Book tastings in ELA and a gallery walk in SS were a great way to start to the week!
