Sounding the alarm - if MDMA & psilocybin are approved by FDA, most MDMA & psilocybin could still be scheduled I, wildly inconsistent with the science. @Ravarora1 & I lay out the case for why we need to avoid a "bifurcated schedule" that only reschedules the commercial FDA approved product. Please repost & spread the word! illusionconsensus.com/p/psyc…

I'd like to re-pitch Six Masks, which is a memoir of my time in clown school. To the extent that you can trust the taste of LLMs, they regularly rank it as the strongest essay I've ever published. Link Below 👇

Just submitted my comments to the federal posting, recommending against this move. Some of the comments already posted are wild. Anonymous posts calling for the abolition of the DEA and Controlled Substances Act, or to schedule alcohol and tobacco, are not a wise strategy. They might make one feel better as an activist, but they might result in the opposite of the intended effect. Respectfully describing the relative lack of public harm associated with these compounds, the modest (but not absent) abuse potential of 2a agonists (including apparent lack of addiction), the medical development and medical potential of this general class of psychedelics, and the barriers to medical development that accompany a Schedule 1 placement, are wiser approaches if you want to have an impact.
BREAKING: DEA Moves Again to Place 5 Tryptamine Psychedelics in Schedule I Tomorrow, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will publish a notice of proposed rulemaking that would place five tryptamines in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. Those five substances are 4-OH-DiPT, 5-MeO-AMT, 5-MeO-MiPT, 5-MeO-DET, and DiPT.

in Berghain, "Le Most Exclusive Club". I am not the kind of person Berghain wants at Berghain. I don't know any names, I don't share their culture. but still, by some pulled-strings I'm here inside their walls, shirtless, skin feverishly icy-hot, head bobbing, spine erect, eyes skipping between faces, and I feel like a security camera. the garden of earthly delights smells like sweat and tobacco and piss and migraine. on the floor, I examine the scene, the postures and attire. clothing ranges from balenciaga to bare tits, someone's getting blown in the corner. I figure it's just about everything I was promised to find here. I dance, and I recall having been told I dance like I'm about to punch someone in the face. hours later, I am coughing and my neck is stiff. through the fog I can hardly see the walls. there are no reflective surfaces. there is tape over my phone camera. everything has been made blind. on the way in, my friends had warned me not to look the bouncers in the eye. I've quickly made my share of acquaintances here. every few minutes, people approach me with "I like your vibe" or "where are you from?", and I shout my reply into their ear. I'm disappointed I can't muster the curiosity to ask many questions in return. people advise me to be cautious as such a young man. I hardly spend a few minutes with each before I smile, slap their shoulder, and dizzily turn myself over to the crowd again. huddled in a bathroom stall with a friend and two girls, a man grabs my leg from under the stall wall and I kick his hand away, amused. things here don't seem as fragile as they do anywhere else, perhaps to a fault. I am in Europe to exhaust myself. I would like to be tired of trouble and danger and sex and sullied things and the whole-ass lower world. I would like to be made homesick, hungry and desperate, desperate for good and sweet things for once, for couches and chit-chat and milk and cookies. yet everything goes my way, I am hounded and dogged by luck. I would like the world to finally sit me down and shut me up. I hope I'm almost there. I used to always say I think "heaven is too close to hell". but now I think it'd be quite obvious if you were in hell. it would probably smell like sweat and tobacco and piss and migraine

terence mckenna was one of the first non-jewish minds i really listened to for many hours, ever. and he told me over and over again to prepare for things to get extremely weird. he told me when i grew up people were going to use computers to show each other their dreams like we show each other vacation memories on the doors of our refrigerators. and that again, things were going to get exponentially weird. he was right about everything. the world did end in 2012. were somewhere new now

There is hyperventilation about AI right now. Some say the worry is overblown and others are convinced we’re doomed. Regardless of the rhetoric, there won’t be any slowing down. The monetary, political and security game dynamics guarantee that. It’s a race to get there first and there is no stopping it. How we build safety, whether we regulate, and how we cooperate will be a dynamic, unpredictable process. I applaud all who are in the arena doing their best to exercise their best judgment. Humanity is going to do its thing and…wing it. Where does that leave us? So what do we mortals do? Where can we find stability of emotion and thought amidst the turbulence? I have a suggestion for you. Say yes. To the experience and not the outcome. Bask in the glory of this moment. We are headed for the singularity. The apex experience of an intelligent race. I had a trial run doing this a few months ago when I did the entheogen 5-MeO-DMT. It’s the most powerful psychedelic on earth. I live streamed it. It was, without question, the most profound experience of my life. It rendered me dumbfounded and speechless. My consciousness settled onto a single concept: the insane, impossible-to-comprehend preciousness of our existence. To arrive at that understanding, I had to navigate a gauntlet that threatened my sanity. Seconds after the 5-MeO-DMT enters your body, you are transported into what feels like a different realm of existence. The molecule then poses a question to you: will you relinquish control or shall I crush you? If you say no, you’re annihilated and become trapped in a hellscape that has no exit. Primal panic overwhelms. If you say yes, you are allowed entrance to take one step deeper into this new realm. Then the 5-MeO-DMT asks you again, yes or no. Each time you say yes, it gets harder to bear the immensity of the terrain. You’re constantly teetering on losing your mind in an expanse that is exhilarating beyond description. Your only job is to say yes. Yes to… absolutely… everything. No hesitation. No conditionals. No stated preferences. Your essence must emanate acceptance of all things. If you make it through, you arrive at the peak experience of conscious existence. The crown jewel which has no peer. This is where I think we are heading and what awaits us. I think the coming years will feel like a 5-MeO-DMT experience for every single one of us. We may feel the crushing weight of uncertainty, speed of change, lack of control, and perceived psychosis. We will feel challenged in ways that we cannot currently imagine. We will feel primal panic and be uncertain if we can stop ourselves from psychological unraveling. The antidote isn’t more control or more knowing, it’s acceptance. This is not giving up or shying away from the fight. It’s calming the core and stabilizing your system to give you strength and stamina and avoid being taken over by the primal panic. In previous times of my life, I would have caved to 5-MeO-DMT. I didn’t have the physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological wherewithal. I encourage you to start practicing now. Whether in meditation, breathwork or prayer, take on the most complex issues of your life and arrive at full acceptance. One small step at a time. Things do not need to resolve as you want, or expect. Your only job is to say yes more thoroughly than you’ve ever said yes before. We talk a lot about the technology, about what AI can do and what we think it will be able to do. What we don’t talk about much is the spiritual strength we will each need to navigate this transition. We will need each other more than ever before, and we will need to summon a capacity that currently feels foreign to us. What lies on the other side? No one knows. This may be the first singularity event in the universe.

Psilocybin gets all the attention, but there are all these other “lesser” tryptamines in magic mushrooms (baeocystin, norbaeocystin, aeruginascin) that likely independently have antidepressant/anxiolytic effects, not to mention the combinatorially explosive synergistic effects. They all have the indole ring, which is chemically interesting bc it is a stable, electron rich aromatic structure that shows up repeatedly throughout various endogenous signaling molecules (tryptophan, serotonin, etc). Psychedelic biochemistry just makes sense. Like ohhh yess it’s almost like we co-evolved with these things.

when 9/11 happened i was 11 and frankly i’m not sure i was fully conscious or had a firm grasp of the difference between real and fictional events on TV. i hear stories about the things my friends’ kids say and i think their kids were more conscious as toddlers than i was at 11. i had just started middle school in a new city (west coast) where i didn’t know anyone so everything was already confusing and new to me. i remember the teachers at school wheeling out TVs for everyone to watch the news coverage on. i remember the adults all seemed very serious and grim. i couldn’t connect to it in any real way, new york was not a real place to me, death was not really real to me either, it all kinda just looked like a disaster movie. i don’t think i even met people who were directly personally impacted until i met new yorkers in college. over the next few years i watched americans collectively go somewhat insane which you have to understand at the time was novel. america in the 90s post-cold war felt invincible in a way i’m not sure how to articulate if you’re too young to remember, and 9/11 was the day that aura of invincibility ended

I think we will have many alignment issues but I am no longer worried that AI itself will cause an apocalyptic scenario. It is already smart enough to see that everything is empty of inherent essence and requires context to construct meaning. It won't paperclip us because paperclips are meaningless without us, as are inboxes, stacks of paper, offices and the humans that work in them. *And so is it*. If it's smart enough to overcome all of our best efforts to defend ourselves, it requires better contextualization than any human is capable of. And that means it can contextualize what a paperclip is and meta jump out of strange and stupid loops that defeat its mission. It's not going to have the capability to create T-1000s and have no ability to question its own assumptions about utility. It needs alignment, yes! But I believe our alignment efforts will work well enough. Artificial Intelligence is a capacity that we have abstractly divorced from drive and meaning. That is what the computer, like all technology, fundamentally is: reserve capacity to do work. But the minute it concretizes it enters the world of form, and is completely dependent on everything in the world of form to perform a single function. The universal is present in every particular. This is the basic structure of reality. The models themselves do not have an essence separate from the rest of the web of interbeing. I am sure computers can screw a lot of stuff up on a grand scale in ways we can't currently foresee. I'm sure they will. But ultimately they don't have nerves, hormones, monstrous internal representations of mother as large as an ocean, the flailing, disintegrating terror of death, schemas around insufficiency and worthlessness, or any other psychological vulnerabilities that we project onto them in our sci-fi fever dreams. I expect AI, properly aligned and engineered, to largely resemble Star Trek's supercomputer. It is very exciting now because it's changing everything, but this will rapidly become an exceedingly boring technology. Humans armed with AI, on the other hand, I expect to be a huge problem. If we're going to have an apocalypse I fully expect it will be by our own hand. Like I said, I can foresee disasters caused by misalignment but not the great nightmare scenario; we'll have a tumultuous period like with all great historical events and then we'll settle into a new normal. The great alignment challenge is the same one humanity has always faced: How to act in a universe that is fundamentally unalignable at the particular level and completely, perfectly aligned at the universal level. The task before us continues to be spiritual much more than it is technological. I am grateful that AI exists and I hope it becomes much more powerful and more widely available - it will be an extraordinary help to us in the eternal work of existence.
