Tom Cruise wearing a flight suit during the scene where he has a break down over the purpose of his work as an actor … probably nothing

Capitalism works if and only if all members see themselves as "pre-rich" or "feasibly-rich-if-they-wanted-it-badly-enough". Remove that and the system collapses.

It’s great that AI is scrambling political coalitions. Partisanship is a mind killer. Once you succumb to it, you’ve just flushed any hope of having an intellectual life down the toilet.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Slop does not come from AI, but from the heart of man. AI only reveals the slop that is already in the heart of man. What man desires is slop. The problem is with man, not the machines.

Very optimistic take on what the internet has been doing
AI will do to everyone what the Internet has been doing for 20 years, just more so: it'll make the smart people smarter, and the dumb people dumber. It'll empower those with agency, and turn the slothful into NPCs. No amount of 'alignment' or policy will much change that.

The most important thing you can do over the next few years is REFUSE to outsource your critical thinking to AI For all the ink spilled about the humanities being dead, if AI makes "what to ask" and "how to interpret" core skills, humanities students are quite well positioned

I enjoyed greatly the Odyssey (thought I am not used to watch moving images, which made some scenes feel more poignant). The most gripping part was the siren episode which made me reread my own scene in #FooledbyRandomness (after almost 3 decades).

Funniest part of the Odyssey discourse is that the central novel conceit - that an apparently abstract moral norm like ξενία is fragile, can be globally undermined by individual noncompliance, and holds up civilization in complex, holistic ways - is a deeply conservative notion.

I hate when people at work ask you what books you are reading for professional development. I am reading books to counteract the effects of being professionally developed. I am reading books that bring me back to being human.
