Good read from @AfricaNenda on Africa's crossborder trade. What is needed: (1) Improved local-currency settlement (2) Common standards, data sharing to allow regulatory interoperability. (3) Make the most of what exists.

UBA Mali is promoting this as an app feature. The underlying development is more structurally significant than the promotional framing suggests. BCEAO has achieved something PAPSS and PSDA are still working toward at continental scale. Free, real-time interoperability across banks, fintechs, and mobile money operators, spanning eight countries. That's a genuine win for financial inclusion and cost reduction in the WAEMU zone. But it's worth being precise about why this was achievable here first. WAEMU shares a single currency, the CFA franc. BCEAO didn't have to solve currency conversion, FX liquidity pooling, or cross-jurisdictional settlement risk. The hardest layer of what PAPSS and PSDA are attempting elsewhere on the continent. PI-SPI solved institutional-silo interoperability within a currency union. That's a meaningfully easier problem than solving interoperability across sovereign currencies with independent monetary policy. The lesson for anyone tracking pan-African harmonization: currency union isn't a nice-to-have precondition, it's the variable that made this particular success possible. Continental harmonization efforts without that precondition face a structurally harder version of the same problem.
• Téléchargez l’appli RedPay ici 👇🏽 Play Store : shorturl.at/ehAXr App Store : shorturl.at/sraT0 #PISPI #Interopérabilité #UBARedPay #africasglobalbank

'Let's restrict access to financial services for vulnerable populations' is absurd yet this well-reasoned report by @avabbasova for @RUSI_org on the adverse consequences of @FATFNews overly-restrictive standards finds this to be the de-facto policy. rusi.org/explore-our-researc…

FinCEN just proposed requiring stablecoin issuers to implement customer identification programs under the GENIUS Act. US-side compliance floor established. The corridor-specific delivery layer. CBN nominee accounts, BoG VASP licensing, BEAC documentation gaps, M-PESA trust batching doesn't harmonize automatically. Compliance at issuance and compliance at delivery are two different problems.

A lot of people commenting on this tweet I wrote miss the point. Loans are funded by cheap deposits, and the bigger you want your loan book to become, the bigger your deposit base becomes. That is where the fight starts. This is NOT about lending but the funding of the lending. I will write a deeper article about it. The real competition is on the deposit side of the equation, which will fund profitable lending. Banks have had a monopoly on this. Large fintechs won't be borrowing expensive money to lend; they also won't be depending solely on float. FairMoney, PalmPay, OPay, Flutterwave, and even Piggyvest and Paystack won't sit idle and watch Moniepoint. The market is going to change in a way we have never dreamed of. There may also be a few new mega funding rounds or even IPOs to initially back this.

“Users don't want to "use" stablecoins for a transaction and convert back to local currency. They want to hold dollars. The transaction is the side effect. … And it's why the next phase of LATAM fintech is going to be won by whoever owns the daily balance, not the transfer.”

Africa's dollars are fragmented offshore and this discussion between @SamoraKariuki and April Long of @HelloWaka_ is about stablecoins replacing geographic hubs by aggregating offshore USD liquidity onto public rails. The promise is more efficient recycling of USD.
"Africa doesn't have a dollar problem. It has a plumbing problem." The dollars exist. They're scattered across correspondent accounts in Frankfurt, Paris, and London, invisible to traders who need them in Lagos and Nairobi. New episode with April Long on how stablecoins are fixing the triangular trade flow Africa never had a hub to process.

Why is the choice between a clearly ineffective and very very costly bank framework versus no crypto framework at all? We need to do better.
Replying to @faryarshirzad
When banks have vulnerabilities in their AML systems, there’s a framework in place to address even the smallest compliance lapses. With crypto firms, there’s no framework, there’s a free-for-all: terrorist groups get financed, drugs cross borders, criminals get paid. There’s so little transparency, we don’t even know how deep the problem is.

This is not entirely a US domestic issue; we have an international financial system and solutions should involve the FATF. @FATFNews
Congress laid the groundwork for debanking and got us into this mess. But Congress also has the power to bring transparency, stop reputational risk regulation, and reform the Bank Secrecy Act to finally end debanking. @EconWithNick buff.ly/RKMfzpN

Fast food fraud. Ghanaian authorities dismantled a cyber-fraud network operating across Ghana and Nigeria that defrauded 200+ victims. Using professionally designed websites and apps, the scammers mimicked fast-food brands, collecting payments but never delivering orders.

NZ Trailblazes Open Banking. Free access to regulated APIs allows lower-cost account-to-account payments. And with banking data flowing directly into accounting platforms, businesses get real-time visibility of cashflow, faster reconciliation, and fewer manual processes.
