Today, I officially opened the Leaders’ Retreat for the newly elected NRM MPs and party-leaning Independents at the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi. I congratulated them on their victory and the NRM’s strong performance and reminded them that we must address our weaknesses to do even better.
I emphasised that they are now leaders who must deepen their understanding of ideology, philosophy and strategy in order to diagnose society’s problems and prescribe solutions. This generation must end poverty by creating prosperity through production, not begging or corruption. Every adult must earn from producing a good or a service. I look forward to the engagements of the week ahead.

There’s a growing trend of "cut off your family, they’re toxic" advice circulating these days. It’s interesting because many of the people preaching this are often left feeling empty, disconnected and unhappy when they retire to their homes at night, despite spending their days surrounded by acquaintances and social friends.
Every small misunderstanding with family is now quickly labeled as toxicity. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are certainly many toxic family members out there that warrant cutting off.
But let’s not forget that toxic behaviors can also come from us children. Some of us, influenced by social media and trends, have “grown wings” and now believe tetugambwako (we cannot be advised). The moment a relative dares to challenge us, they’re instantly labeled as toxic or as not wanting the best for us.
But here’s the thing: there will come a time when family, whether it’s your cousins, aunties, siblings, uncles, or parents will hold you down better than anyone else even when you’re not close. You might let the world mislead or sway you, but when that time comes, you may find yourself standing alone.
If you have family that genuinely wishes you well, despite their shortcomings or occasionally "harsh tones," try to extend grace and keep that relationship cordial.
No one is perfect, and maintaining a healthy, respectful relationship with those who care about you will always be worth it.

I think we forgot "the carrot" part of that EFRIS discussion. If I was URA, I'd partner with UDB to create an SME product using EFRIS as the basis for disbursement. For example:
The registered SMEs get 10% of their turnover in EFRIS as an unsecured loan from UDB payable over 3 to 5 years.
If you are part of a strategic sector (Manufacturing, agro-processing, healthcare) or you have other impact characteristics (i.e. youth, women or refugee owned) the percentages goes up or the terms improve. No unnecessary back-and-forth, no long DD process, and no security. You file and you are compliant: You get a UDB loan at concessionary terms. It's fast and straightforward. The administrative costs per loan would reduce and SMEs would get money without feeling like they have to hand-over their kidney. Make it system-driven and you also reduce the whole "I need to know someone" mentality.
The banks do it based on your turnover already on the bank statements so it's not that crazy to think about. I hear UDB struggles to find SMEs to fund so this addresses that as well.
Most importantly, Traders and SMEs owners finally have a positive incentive to comply and start filing beyond penalties, interest and enformcement. URA can now focus it's sticks to the real evaders.
PS: % and terms used are for illustrative purposes. You could cap the envelope, allocate it to specific regions or sectors, change the repayment terms, etc.
