I worked alongside Santos with Portugal, and I saw how difficult things became during that final World Cup. People blamed Fernando for benching Cristiano, but they didn’t understand the decisions he had to make. When you’re coaching a team, you cannot allow one player’s status to determine every tactical decision. Against Switzerland, Gonçalo Ramos started and scored a hat-trick. Against Morocco, Santos made another difficult decision, but suddenly the discussion was no longer about Portugal’s tactics. It was about Cristiano being on the bench. As a manager, when your system isn’t working and you believe another player can give you something different, you have to make that decision. You need players who will press, defend and work for the team. Cristiano has extraordinary qualities, but at that stage of his career, those demands presented a different challenge. And when you make a decision he doesn’t agree with, you risk creating another problem. That is something every manager working with a player of his stature has to consider. Now look at Ten Hag. Maybe he made mistakes, and I’m not saying every decision he made was correct. But when a manager says he explained things to a player and still feels that player let him and the team down, we have to ask ourselves what happened between them. Honestly, I think this is one of the reasons many Portuguese people still respect Lionel Messi today, and some Ronaldo fans interpret that respect as disrespect towards Cristiano. People admire Messi not only for what he does on the pitch, but also for how he carries himself. You can debate who the better player is, but respecting Messi should never mean disrespecting Ronaldo. Cristiano is one of the greatest players football has ever seen. His achievements speak for themselves. But nobody is bigger than the team, and reputation cannot protect you from criticism. At some point, we have to stop making every manager the villain. When these situations keep repeating themselves, there is a bigger conversation we need to have.”
