It is with profound sadness that I have learnt of the passing of Tundu Lissu’s elder brother, Alute Lissu Mughwai. My heartfelt condolences go out to Tundu and his entire family during this difficult and painful time.
During my visit to Tanzania in April 2025, I had the opportunity to meet Alute Mughwai, who, like his brother Tundu Lissu, was a lawyer. He had come to represent his brother at the Kisutu Court. This personal encounter makes his passing particularly close to my heart.
We are fighting so hard for freedom, justice and dignity across East Africa, and Tundu Lissu has been at the forefront of this struggle—standing firmly for the rights of his people and the democratic future of our region.
Yet today, he must bear the profound pain of losing his brother from behind prison walls, unable to stand beside his family and mourn with them. That his family must postpone the burial in the hope that he will be freed in time to lay his brother to rest is deeply heartbreaking.
It is profoundly painful that a man who has given so much to the struggle for freedom must now face such a personal loss without the freedom to grieve as he should.
We will continue to stand with Tundu and to demand his release. He ought to be free to mourn his brother, to stand with his family in this hour of grief, and to continue the struggle for a more just, free and democratic East Africa.
May Alute Mughwai rest in peace, and may his family find strength, comfort and courage during this difficult time.

My random highlights and takeaways from @godbless_lema's presser earlier today
-First, for some intellectual honesty, I must declare a conflict of interest: I have issues with LA influencer (Mange), mostly regarding her sourcing of info and her self-righteousness. So, this is perhaps not a very neutral take, I guess. Thought I should mention that because she features a lot in the presser
-Well, that was a very long, combative 🥊 and at times emotional presser. Lema had a lot to get off his chest, totally understandable
-He went very hard on 🇺🇸 LA influencer, called Mshezi, Muongo & Mpumbavu. Lema emphatically says she is feeding CDM supporters lies, innuendo, slander and lots of gossip. Says it is pure character assassination, and he had to defend himself and his family
-Lema is pissed off CDM members are just swallowing rumors and gossips peddled by LA influencer and her loyal fans. He looked super disappointed here especially with how CDM members are letting LA influencer and her fans influence how they feel about him and the party. Basically sheep who follow herd without any thoughts of their own. He has a point
-He's ready to take accountability if the 'middlemen' allegations plus other rumors are confirmed by the party. He has nothing to hide. This is very important
-Says Wanaharakati must be realistic and pragmatic about operating climate, overseas vs Tz-based, considering varying degrees of risks and exposure vs the state. Can't argue with that. He gave an example here which I'm sure will rattle some 🔧
-He advised Pambalu not to travel back to Tz due to impending security risks and was shocked to see him in Arusha. Contrary to rumors spread by Hilda and others. Lema brought a young CDM cadre to prove that
-Lema also called on CDM leaders to intervene and respond timely when leaders are being attacked and their image tarnished by wanaharakati. He feels isolated and suggests the party is somehow scared to condemn some issues. Over to you @jjmnyika
-On Maaridhiano and asali 🍯 allegations: Lema says CDM central committee has already made it very clear about the 2 main conditions for maaridhiano. But he added he has been doing 'strategic engagements' and lobbying behind closed doors which is normal in politics and doesn't imply kulamba asali. Perhaps this raises questions about this kind of bargaining, engagement, and deal-making. Even if he is doing so with good intentions, is he operating outside party structures? Perhaps he has CDM's blessing in all of this, or maybe not! I completely understand those with concerns and reservations. The party should tell us more; again, evidence matters
-After a barrage of attacks, it's great that he finally got a chance to share his side of the story IMO. He is not perfect; no one is. Ohh wait, LA influencer is perfect and always perfect and right according to her blind faithfulls
-My final thoughts: The absolute last thing CDM needs is infighting and divisiveness. The real danger is losing sight of the bigger picture. TAL verdict is a few days away; all cadres and supporters must stick together, the stakes couldn't be higher. As I wrote 2 months ago, the tension (within CDM) between wanasiasa and certain section of wanaharakati is at all time high, and serving no one apart from CCM party-state which loves seeing CDM fractured with infighting 😟

Tanzanian human rights defender Twaha Mwaipaya was reportedly abducted at approximately 2:00pm today in Kamulu, Machakos County, by individuals travelling in three vehicles, one of which was a Toyota Land Cruiser hardtop.
Twaha was en route by taxi to visit friends when the incident occurred. There is an urgent need to establish his whereabouts. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to come forward immediately. We call on Kenyan authorities to take swift action to locate him and ensure his safety and protection.

It is with great sorrow that I mourn the passing of Zimbabwean businessman Mr Wicknell Chivayo, his beloved wife, and three other people who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Marondera.
Zimbabwe and Africa have lost a young and visionary entrepreneur who touched the lives of many.
