In the unlikely event anyone who has been protecting themselves from infection with respirator masks and is considering unmasking because “the risk is low now” I’m going to offer up a long thread on a kind of risk management I was trained in as it may help for decision making 🧵

CW suicide As someone who tried 2x, I need ppl to know, if you “can only offer an ear to listen and a comforting presence,” then hi chance you’re doing exactly what’s needed Thinking basic emotional support belongs exclusively in therapy is toxic ideology of hyper-individualism
As a person who is chronically suicidal: Your friends are not therapists. They do not have the eduction or the tools to help you and most the time can only offer an ear to listen and a comforting presence.

🙃Successful Dr. appointment: 1. Beg and tell half-truths to change in-person appointment to phone appointment (unmasked hospital clinic) 2. Research treatment options and choose which to try first. 3. Carefully rehearsed phone presentation to Dr so she thinks it was her idea.

To all my international moots, this is the current situation in Indonesia. Most parts of the country are covered in wildfire haze. The haze has even reached Singapore and Malaysia, yet the government has taken no meaningful action.

It's very difficult to get on disability in Canada. You have to be examined by doctors and need many documents proving illness and why you deserve govt assistance, and when approved the $ is hardly enough to survive on. Those who think it's easy don't know anyone on disability.
I'm never going to be worried about anyone faking a disability to get on benefits and it's not even because that barely even happens (which is true, basically no one does this). It's bc disability benefits, esp SSI, is far less than I think any human deserves, period.

.@CUPEAB has been doing great work at demystifying and taking apart anti-immigration beliefs that have been touted as fact
Albertans were asked to guess how much of our healthcare budget goes to non-permanent residents. The guesses? 15%-50%. The reality? Just 1% The budget strain isn't coming from immigrants. It's coming from UCP government choices. Vote NO on October 19 #ableg #canpoli #abpoli

That’s prob how they found the food kitchen! It’s how ppl look for jobs, buy things, for banking…EVERYTHING requires a phone, an email account and 2 step verification. Sell the phone, food for a week then what? Back at the food kitchen with no way to function in modern society.
Waiting to serve at our local food kitchen and all the people waiting to eat a free meal have a phone?

That’s what they said: as in blood streaming from the eyes directly. So there’s that.
I was at a craft store when I took this photo. The very next second, a woman walked in WHO WAS COUGHING AND CRYING BLOOD. I yelled, “That woman is crying blood!” And ppl looked at ME like a freak because I was the only person there wearing a mask. Wild wacky ass world we live in.

Also “help is available”. Maybe in like a stopgap sort of way. Maybe in a “better than nothing” sort of way. But meaningful help, help that would actually HELP, would require fundamentally restructuring society. And that is most certainly not available.
“Reach out if you’re suicidal” most people get violently uncomfortable if your mental health crisis manifests in anything beyond long drives together and crying sometimes

Every year, viral social media posts tell us to bleach pumpkins to preserve them. And every year, I post: please don't do that. Pumpkins are food. Wild animals will nibble a jack-o'-lantern, so bleach, paint and plastic decorations turn a pumpkin into contaminated food. Wildlife agencies recommend keeping pumpkins free of chemical preservatives. You can preserve your pumpkins longer by keeping them cool and bringing them inside between displays. It's also reasonable to accept that pumpkins are perishable and they will rot over time. As they should. When your jack-o-lantern is done, remove candles, wax and decorations. Compost an untreated pumpkin or use an approved municipal drop-off. Don't dump piles of pumpkins in parks or preserves; even organic waste is litter when it concentrates food, spreads non-native seeds and attracts animals to roads and people. Painted or treated pumpkins belong in the trash unless local guidance says otherwise. Further reading on this: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pumpkin guidance; Illinois Extension pumpkin disposal guidance.

The uncomfortable truth is our society is profoundly unconducive for suicide prevention. Bills still pile up. The odds of having ppl with the bandwidth/emotional intelligence to help you is a diceroll. Professionals have waitlists. Every facet of society is stacked against you.
You can rlly only open up to people about serious mental health issues like twice before they start to get frustrated so its kinda unfair to tell people to just talk to their loved ones when that's not a real long term solution guys

You wouldn’t identify an introvert from an extravert there. All that happens to them is they do all the socializing work and aren’t recharged by the experience. It’s nice to check on others as they may be dealing with shyness but being pissed about it is a boundary issue. Yours.
I dislike introverts who need to be told everything multiple times when in a group setting. You have to keep offering them food, try hard to engage them and check on them to ensure they are ok. They will just sit quietly in a corner and you will never know if they are ok or not, or if they are upset or need care. I hate doing that labour for them. Like dude you can talk, you are normal! You are an adult, not a child. Please emote, talk and let others know what you want or don't want. Be a part of what's going on and don't kill the vibe by just disconnecting with who's around you. Sincerely, an extrovert who always puts that effort.

It is also time to avoid ALL indoor events during the increase in viruses. Masking works great, however in a crowded indoor settings it is not worth taking the risk.
Respiratory season is back It's time for: ✅ Covid shot ✅ Flu shot ✅ N95s

The way that people think that becoming disabled by long covid is a rare occurrence…when 1 in 5 people experience at least one new, long term health condition from just one infection and that rate increases by 35% with each infection…
