⚓ B-Strike 1000 goes naval. At the naval defence exhibition @SalonEuronaval in Paris, ArianeGroup unveiled the next step of its conventional ballistic line-up: the “naval” B-Strike 1000 missile, for deep strike and anti-ship strike with a range of 1000 kilometers. After the ground-to-ground version, B-Strike now extends to naval platforms.

The story keeps getting crazier. To recap everything that has been reported so far:
- The US intelligence community discovered that Jensen Huang, the CEO of the largest company in the world, was sleeping with Alice Huang, a Chinese spy and an executive at Megaspeed. (FT)
- Multiple independent investigations have concluded that Megaspeed is likely a Chinese cutout, which helps Chinese companies access AI chips or circumvent export controls. (NYT and Bloomberg)
- The US intelligence community also concluded that Alice Huang’s goal was to convince Jensen to lobby the U.S. government to loosen export controls on advanced AI chips. (NYT)
- The intelligence community relayed this information to “a small group of top US government officials” earlier this year. (FT)
- Over the last year, Jensen Huang has repeatedly lobbied the U.S. government to loosen export controls on advanced chips. @BISgov has done so, not only by permitting the export of H200 chips to China, but also not enforcing export controls that would have required a license for exports of the most advanced Blackwell chips to Megaspeed and Southeast Asia.
- Although @CommerceGov leadership was presumably briefed on this information by the U.S. intelligence community, @BISgov has taken no actions to tighten controls on Megaspeed or Southeast Asia.
- Megaspeed remains a preferred cloud partner of Nvidia, and continues to receive Nvidia Blackwell chips despite employing a Chinese spy who reportedly is romantically engaged with the CEO of Nvidia.
- Tens of billions of dollars worth of AI chips have been exported to Southeast Asia this year alone, and Malaysia and Singapore are now two of the four largest importers of AI chips in the world.
What is going on here??? We need answers. The question of who gets the most advanced AI chips in the world is literally the defining strategic question of our time. And not only does it seem like the MSS may be directly influencing the debate on export controls in the United States, but also @CommerceGov is refusing to listen to the warnings of the IC on this issue. What is a POSSIBLE good explanation for why Megaspeed is still receiving chips? Why is there not a license requirement for AI chip shipments to all of Southeast Asia? This is beyond strange at this point.
The fallout from this story will be massive. Obviously, the motivations underpinning Nvidia’s policy views opposing export controls must now all be questioned. But also, how did @BISgov sit on this information and has still taken no actions? We need answers.
US intelligence agencies believe @Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang had romantic relationship with alleged Chinese spy

An American Ohio class nuclear submarine can carry 20 Trident II D5 missiles.
Each weighs nearly 59 tonnes, contains three enormous solid rocket motors and can carry multiple independently targetable nuclear warheads.
The remarkable part is that these weapons may never be fired in combat, yet must remain ready through decades of service.
Their solid propellant contains both fuel and oxidizer, sealed inside the rocket motors. Over time, those energetic materials can age, develop defects or lose their original mechanical properties. The Navy must continuously inspect, qualify and replace ageing components.
In 2019, the admiral overseeing the program revealed that all three rocket motors in one successfully tested Trident were almost 27 years old.
Launching one presents an entirely different engineering problem.
The first rocket motor cannot simply ignite inside the submarine. Instead, expanding gas ejects the nearly 59 tonne missile from its launch tube, pushing it through seawater until it breaks the surface.
Only after clearing the water can the first rocket motor ignite, at precisely the right moment. Too early would endanger the launch, too late, and the nearly 60 tonne missile will lose momentum and fall back into the sea.
Its three solid-fuel stages accelerate the missile beyond 20,000 km/h, shedding their empty structures as each successive motor takes over. Published maximum-range estimates reach approximately 12,000 kilometres.
And throughout powered flight, the missile must maintain an extraordinarily accurate understanding of its own movement.
Precision gyroscopes measure changes in orientation, accelerometers track acceleration, and an onboard computer calculates its motion. A stellar camera can observe stars to correct accumulated navigation errors, allowing Trident to navigate without continuous GPS signals.
After powered flight, its nuclear re-entry vehicles continue along their ballistic trajectories before descending through the atmosphere.
One W88 warhead alone has an estimated explosive yield of 475 kilotons, more than 30 times that of Hiroshima. A single Trident can carry several such re-entry vehicles.
Now consider the engineering responsibility.
The missile must remain dependable through repeated deployments, maintenance and ageing, while its nuclear payload must remain protected against unintended detonation even when surrounding electronic systems malfunction.
The safety requirements are extraordinary, under normal conditions, the permitted probability of premature nuclear detonation is no greater than one in a billion over a weapon's lifetime.
Trident entered service in 1990. More than three decades later, America continues modernising its electronics, guidance and nuclear components around an established missile architecture.
A weapon designed to deter a nuclear war that may never happen, yet engineered and maintained for decades so that, if the unthinkable ever occurs, it must work flawlessly on its very first use, even after 25 years of service.
