The drone attack on Moscow this week was a major blow to the city. Ukraine is making this war impossible for Russians to ignore. Make the airports close. Make fuel harder to get. Hit the economy. Hit the energy system. Make everyday life uncomfortable enough that people start asking whether chasing an imperial dream and trying to revive old maps is actually worth it. Ukrainian strikes have already knocked out refinery capacity, pushed up fuel prices and caused shortages across parts of Russia. For years, Putin has been able to wage this war while keeping much of Moscow feeling strangely distant from it. That distance is disappearing. The smoke is now over the capital, the refinery is damaged, and the consequences of the war are becoming much harder to keep on the other side of the border. Whether that eventually changes Russia’s appetite for the war is the huge question. But that is what this calculation is. Don’t just destroy the weapons. Make the reason for building them feel like it isn’t worth the price.

A year ago, we published the stories of 16 Russians and Ukrainians from the occupied territories who had left the country, only to return to Russia or their homes under occupation and face politically motivated criminal prosecution. Our new report examines 24 cases of people who returned for entirely ordinary reasons: to renew a passport, visit a seriously ill relative, collect a pension or see family. Instead, many were detained, prosecuted and accused of serious offences. Read the full report ↓ memopzk.org/wp-content/uploa…

The dacha of Elena Frolova, editor of Kolchugino News in Vladimir region, burned down after she questioned the regional governor Alexander Avdeyev about the closure of a maternity home.

While more Ukrainians are being killed in Kyiv and other cities, the EU makes the horrendous decision to lift sanctions on two russian oligarchs. Stop asking: “What else can Europe do to support Ukraine?” Here is a very simple answer: do not lift sanctions on people from putin’s circle while putin is killing Ukrainians.

So apparently the Trump admin is now concerned to facilitate Putin's engagement with other world leaders. Putin values status recognition of this kind enormously, particularly from the US, and it will be taken as a further sign of Western weakness.
. @SecRubio: "we've invited President Putin to the G20. We think it's an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president, but also with other world leaders. we hope that's an invitation he'll accept. there's an opportunity in December, if that happens."

Since this morning, work has been underway to deal with the aftermath of Russian strikes on Kyiv. The Russians launched many drones against the city, a significant number of them jet-powered. Russia continues to turn civilian and critical infrastructure into targets: pharmaceutical facilities, gas stations, railways, communications infrastructure, and shopping malls. As of now, two people have been reported killed and another 24 wounded. My condolences to their families and loved ones. There were also strikes on cities and communities in eight regions. At every meeting during the UN General Assembly, we are working to ensure continued support for Ukraine. Equally important is the fair pressure exerted on Russia through sanctions. Ukraine is grateful to everyone who acts and applies principled pressure. Virtually all of our partners agree that while such strikes continue, while this terrorist war goes on, this is no time for weakness. It is important that sanctions send a signal to Russia, including its oligarchs, that the war must be ended, not simply waited out. Thank you to everyone who is helping Ukraine!

Polish FM Radosław Sikorski at the UN Security Council yesterday: "Sergey, I know you are listening. Tell your boss – enough is enough.” "You have been trying to conquer Donbas for over 12 years, and Kyiv for over 4. You have been stopped by heroic Ukraine, a country with 1/10th of Russia’s GDP. But Poland has almost half of your GDP. Europe has 10 times more GDP, NATO has 25 times more GDP than you. You can kill many people all the time, but you cannot win." "You can stop this imperial war of choice at any moment. Do not endanger Europe and the world for another day. Stop destroying them, the future of Russia." “My proposal is that democratic presidential elections, under international supervision, be held simultaneously in both Russia and Ukraine, on the same day. Kaja Kallas on the US inviting Putin to the G20 summit in Miami: "It was very hard to hear. Considering that even a few days ago, there were Russian intelligence officers charged for murders of Americans on American soil. So, my question is: do these intelligence officers operate alone or do they get orders from Putin? And I can tell you: they get orders from Putin."
The United States has officially invited Putin to the G20 summit in Miami, set for December. "We believe this is an opportunity for Putin to engage not only with President Trump, but also with other world leaders. We hope that's an invitation he'll accept," Marco Rubio said.
