Widespread decline of critical ecosystem engineer, Pileated Woodpecker, from Old Forest was 2021's saddest story. Woody's favourite food is Carpenter Ants. Colonies are chronically poisoned by Glyphosate based industrial "treatments" and don't recover. Stop Poisoning the Planet!

These tiny little guys are busy farming teaberry in a Nova Scotia public forest to be clearcut. At least now the government has promised they will no longer be poisoned as well. Can anyone ID to species? 2-3 mm long.

Wondering if the colour of this grasshopper is natural or if it is injury caused by aerial pesticide sprays done the day before. It was alive but let me get very close. Opinions? Species ID? ⁦@xercessociety⁩ ⁦@EntsocAmerica⁩

This unfortunate caterpillar got caught in aerial defoliant spray yesterday. Surfactants included in the pesticide mix to make the poisons stick to the foliage also trap little earthlings in its deadly grip. I am learning SO much out in the Field. No ide this killed'em too 😞

We are continuing to find old historic evidence of Pileated Woodpecker on "managed" Crown Land Forest but as yet, have neither seen nor recorded a single Pileated living therein. And Carpenter Ants? Gone. 😞🐜#ecocide #pesticides @EcocideLaw @cosewic

So it begins. Even though the latest research shows that this #glyphosate based chemical persists for at least 10 years in the forest floor and plants, eliminates Carpenter Ants & Pileated Woodpecker habitat & is a known carcinogen. #Irving #CorporateCapture #poison @EcocideLaw

Finding any insects other than biting ones around "managed" forests is now so rare I notice it. Once, I had take care which log I sat on for lunch or I'd be eaten by ants. No longer ☹️The amazing ants in this picture "farm" lichen & berries. They were doing it eons before us 🐜!

This was the welcoming committee at our Social Enterprise @RememberTata in Tatamagouche all day yesterday. Can you spot it and @maryemacaulay?

Ever wonder what the long stripes crisscrossing google maps at landscape scale are? They are "right-of-ways", visible because vegetation underneath is controlled by pesticides like 2,4-D. We notice beetle and aerial insectivore disappearance nearby. What do you see in your areas?

GONE are signs of Pileated Woodpecker activity in this incredible old forest. GONE are any beetle tracks on snags and deadfall. Site borders a huge electric transmission line where 2-4-D is used for "vegetation management". Let's get humans back on the ground instead of poison!
