India’s sugarcane and bioenergy ecosystem could play a role in shaping the future of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). With India exploring pathways to decarbonise aviation, Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology offers a potential route to convert ethanol into aviation fuel. A pilot project inaugurated in 2024 marked an important step in exploring this pathway. NITI Aayog’s Net Zero Scenario projects SAF demand in India could reach *32 billion litres by 2070*. While this is a long-term projection, it points to the scale of the opportunity ahead. For the sugar industry, the emerging SAF landscape opens up new possibilities for technology, value addition and the wider bioenergy ecosystem. #SAF #SustainableAviationFuel #Ethanol #Bioenergy #SugarIndustry #EnergyTransition #ISMA

India’s pathway to Sustainable Aviation Fuel must begin with the realities of Indian agriculture. 🌱✈️ As part of SAF Horizon: Building Capacity for a Just and Sustainable Energy Transition, ISMA, in partnership with the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), conducted a farmer training programme to strengthen awareness of sustainability across India’s emerging sugarcane-to-SAF value chain. Over the past year, the ISMA × RSB partnership has focused on building capacity for a credible and inclusive SAF ecosystem in India. The journey began with training mill management on sustainability principles and certification requirements, followed by a gap assessment to understand how existing sustainability frameworks align with the realities of Indian sugarcane cultivation, farming practices and the structure of India’s sugar industry. A sustainability framework cannot follow a one-size-fits-all approach across countries. India’s agricultural landscape, predominantly smallholder farming systems and established farmer-mill relationships call for solutions that are informed by local realities and adapted to the Indian context. The gap assessment was therefore an important step towards identifying practical pathways for sustainability certification that work for India. The farmer training brings this journey to its most crucial stakeholder: the Indian farmer. By building awareness of sustainable agricultural practices and their relevance to SAF certification, the initiative aims to place farmers at the heart of India’s clean aviation transition. As India explores the potential of sugarcane-based feedstocks for SAF, building a sustainable ecosystem means looking beyond the fuel itself to the people, practices and partnerships that make its production possible. A just energy transition must not only be sustainable by design, but also relevant to the people who power it. #ISMA #RSB #SAF #SustainableAviationFuel #SAFHorizon #IndianAgriculture #Sugarcane #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #Farmers

Ethanol is more than a fuel. It’s part of a stronger sugarcane economy. When sugar production exceeds demand, surplus stocks can tie up working capital for sugar mills. Ethanol offers an additional avenue for sugar utilisation, helping improve mill liquidity and support timely payments to sugarcane farmers. As of 20 August 2026, 97% of sugarcane dues for the 2025–26 season had been paid, highlighting the importance of a financially resilient sugar sector. The connection between ethanol, mill viability and farmer prosperity is an important part of India’s evolving sugarcane story. #TheEthanolStory #Ethanol #Sugarcane #FarmerProsperity #BioEnergy

The introduction of CAFE-III (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) marks an important step towards improving vehicle efficiency while recognising alternative fuel pathways, including ethanol and flex-fuel vehicles. Importantly, the final notification retains key provisions recognising the contribution of ethanol-blended fuels and flex-fuel technologies to India’s decarbonisation journey. It provides a Carbon Neutrality Factor (CNF) of 8% for vehicles operating on E20 or higher ethanol blends, including Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicles (SHEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and 22.3% for Flex Fuel Ethanol Vehicles (FFVs). For the sugar and bio-energy sector, this recognition is significant. Greater integration of domestic biofuels with mobility can enhance fuel flexibility and energy security, while reducing dependence on imported crude oil. At ISMA, we welcome policy frameworks that support fuel efficiency, cleaner mobility and India’s growing bio-energy ecosystem.
