Bearing witness to U.S.-enabled apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and genocide along with the steadfastness of Palestinians and the solidarity of Jewish Israeli activists has raised our personal stakes in our campaign to block U.S. weapons to Israel.
This Sukkot, we pray for fortitude in our fight for safety, equality, and justice for all — Palestinians and Israelis, our neighbors and ourselves.
As we celebrate the harvest, we think of the Palestinian olive farmers we met with whose groves have been burned by settlers and soldiers alike and the attacks they face when they harvest them.
Just last month, IfNotNow members and staff visited Palestinian partners and Israeli solidarity activists on the ground throughout the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel.
This Sukkot, as we have been gathering safely and joyously inside our sukkahs, our thoughts are with the Palestinians we stood with amid the rubble of their homes, demolished by the Israeli government. And we also remember the ruins of homes in Gaza we could see from a hilltop lookout point.
During Sukkot, Jews build and gather in hut-like structures called sukkahs — celebrating the bounty of the harvest and safe shelter in our Biblical story of freedom from bondage.

Palestinians are stuck in their cars on the roads because the IDF imposed a week-long closure on the West Bank for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. For those travelling between Palestinian cities and villages, already insanely long journeys across the West Bank become even more insane. The reason is presumably that holidays bring special security risks. Yet at the same time, settler municipalities are inviting thousands of tourists to visit the West Bank for Sukkot.
There is no end to the hardships this closure brings to Palestinians. People plan to work, study, visit family, or simply do something for themselves, and then a system operated by and for just one people can upend all those plans. This is why the IDF regularly imposes curfews on Nablus so that a dozen settlers can pray at Joseph’s Tomb, and why most Palestinians in Hebron are barred from entering the city centre. Rather than being driven by security concerns, these restrictions are rooted in a system of supremacy.

To understand what is happening in the West Bank today, listen to what Bezalel Smotrich said back in 2017 he intended to do.
In the “Decisive Plan” he wrote, Smotrich openly articulated the logic of elimination in the West Bank: establishing permanent and irreversible Jewish control and sovereignty while dismantling Palestinian collective existence.
One of the plan’s central tools is “victory through settlement”: expanding settlements and taking over land in order to make Jewish sovereignty an irreversible fact and prevent the possibility of a contiguous, independent Palestinian existence.
The plan leaves Palestinians with three options: relinquish their national aspirations and live under Jewish supremacy, leave, or be defeated by force if they resist.
Smotrich did not invent this project, and the current government did not start it. The plan was also never formally adopted as government policy. But today, Smotrich holds extensive powers over the West Bank, and central elements of this vision are being translated into policy, budgets and action on the ground.
Land takeovers, expanding settlements and outposts, expelling communities and deepening Israeli control are not separate events. They are part of the same political project.

A group of IfNotNow members and staff just recently returned from our visit to the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel, meeting with Palestinian partners and Israeli solidarity activists. Everywhere our delegation went throughout the Land, we encountered the devastating impacts of U.S.-manufactured weapons — paid for by our tax dollars and provided to the Israeli government in the name of Jewish safety.
