A derivative possessor does not account for the existence of the property; it merely passes it along. If every member in the chain possesses the property only through another, then at no point does the property exist in a non-derivative, self-explanatory way.
The entire series would therefore contain nothing but borrowed instances of the property. But a borrowed possession presupposes an actual possessor from whom it is borrowed.
If there is no ultimate, independent possessor, then the property's presence throughout the chain is never genuinely established. In that sense, the property is not merely unexplained; its existence within the series lacks any ontological foundation. An infinite regress of purely derivative possessors thus cannot make the property actual, because what is only borrowed everywhere is possessed nowhere in an ultimate sense. Therefore, the existence of the property throughout the chain necessarily requires a first, non-derivative possessor, without which the chain of borrowers could never exist at all.

An infinite regress is impossible:
1. An infinite chain of borrowers is a backward chain where every member had to borrow what it did not have (an X property or attribute) from a prior member infinitely.
2. In an infinite chain of borrowers, no member possesses any and every property or attribute independently, otherwise it would not need to borrow what it lacks.
3. Therefore, no member is the ultimate possessor of any and every property or attribute.
4.If no member is the ultimate possessor of any and every property or attribute, then the chain as a whole has no ultimate possessor of any and every property or attribute.
5.If the chain as a whole has no ultimate possessor of any and every property or attribute, then what is possessed by the chain is never ultimately grounded.
6.What is never ultimately grounded cannot constitute an actual chain of borrowers.
7. Therefore, an infinite chain of borrowers is impossible.
