A good time to scout for ear rots is …….. now!
It's critical to ID ear rots in the field because many ear rot fungi produce mycotoxins, which can harm livestock and humans.

Although we’ve had early reports of tar spot, the hot summer days we’ve had should slow it down, which reduces the rush to get a fungicide on before tassel.
Tar spot develops under moderate temperatures.
Extended periods (30 days) of mild temps (64-73°F; 18-23℃) are optimum. Monthly temps exceeding 73°F (23°C) reduce chances of tar spot progression.

Can’t just blame fall N, too many factors at play including:
1. Warm, dry summer, fall, winter = likely higher than normal residual soil N
2. Warm winter ideal for OM mineralization = higher soil N available for loss
3. Lots of spring AA applied to warm soil, prior to rains
