Sardar @NabilaIrshad Advocate, Chairperson JK Democratic Party, was detained by police from her Islamabad residence last night. Her name was recently added to Schedule IV by the Kashmir Home Department.
According to her husband, Wajid Ali, police including female officers arrived in two vehicles and took her away. She had recently been active in facilitating dialogue during the ongoing Kashmir crisis, meeting with #JAAC leadership and mainstream political figures in #Islamabad.
Reports also indicate a police raid at the Rawalpindi home of vlogger and activist Azra Alam.

When even mainstream Kashmiri politicians who believe in parliamentary politics and peaceful dialogue are being arrested, one has to ask: What message is the Pakistani establishment along with puppet Government of AJK trying to send to the people of Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir?
The reported late-night arrest of Sardar Nabila Irshad @NabilaIrshad Chairperson of the JK Democratic Party, is deeply disturbing. She was reportedly engaged in facilitating dialogue between the Joint Awami Action Committee @JKJAAC_ and political representatives in an effort to resolve the ongoing crisis peacefully.
She is not someone calling for confrontation.
If even such political voices are being targeted, what does that say about the space for peaceful democratic politics in Kashmir?
Pakistan has consistently criticised India for detaining Kashmiri political leaders. How, then, can similar actions against Kashmiri politicians under its own administration be justified?
What purpose is served by raiding a female political leader’s home at night and taking her into custody when she has been working towards negotiations?
Is the establishment interested in resolving the crisis through dialogue, or is it sending a message that even peaceful political engagement will not be tolerated?
The authorities must explain the legal grounds for her detention, guarantee her rights and safety, and release her unless there is a lawful basis to hold her.
The international community, particularly the British Foreign Office and human rights organisations, should seek answers about the treatment of Kashmiri political representatives.
When dialogue itself becomes a reason for detention, it is not just an individual politician whose rights are at stake. It is the credibility of the entire political process.
