Why are the Right trying to stop people from joining the army? 🇬🇧🪖 Soldiers, sailors and airmen are disproportionately white, working-class men. But are they now turning against the military? Who is behind it? Why is it gaining traction? And what can be done about it? 🧵👇

1/ The Left has forgotten how to dream. Trump wants flying cars, Musk wants to populate Mars etc. Meanwhile, we too often just offer to make things less worse. My latest for @LabourList on what we can learn from ‘remigration’ on how to turn a dream into a policy platform 🧵

The two £36m donations to Reform announced this month are not an isolated phenomenon, but the most dramatic example yet of a longer-term shift towards British parties relying on very large individual donors. 🧵

Young people shouldn't have to rely on a 'postcode lottery' to access employment opportunities. Our recent report found that regions with less suitable opportunities for young people also tend to have higher NEET rates. Here's @RachaelAHenry on GB news this morning.

📢 NEW REPORT It's not just the public who are disillusioned with the politics and policymaking in Holyrood. MSPs themselves have been feeling the malasie. We know because former high profile MSPs told us so in a series of “exit interviews”. Read more ⤵️ippr.org/articles/rebuilding…

MSPs are asking “rubbish” pre-prepared questions at Holyrood committees because they are too busy scrolling social media on their phones, a former SNP minister has told a think tank. Pretty damming comments in latest @IPPRScotland report: scotsman.com/news/politics/m…

Today's stats show that 2024-25 tax year saw record capital gains, and capital gains tax revenue. Capital gains tax is an increasingly important source of revenue for the government, particularly following the unprecedented boom in asset values over the past two decades. Income from wealth is likely to become steadily more significant as technology adoption and automation accelerate in the coming years. We don’t know what the government is planning for the upcoming budget, but CGT reform should be a priority.

Reform are correct in their identification of not enough social housing, but their solution is the wrong one. Social housing is already prioritised for those who need it most - people who are homeless or fleeing domestic violence, families with young children, people living in overcrowded homes. Priority is also given to current or former members of the armed forces and some councils give extra priority to people who are in work or volunteering. Instead of needlessly setting the 1.3 million people on the social housing waiting list against each other, Reform should be laying out exactly how they are going to deliver a boost in social housing numbers. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgj…

Good to see @BBCPanorama picking up child maintenance as an issue - children of separated parents deserve financial security. Our 2025 report opfs.org.uk/policy-and-campa… sets out how child maintenance can be transformed to work best for children and parents.
👧👦This article highlights what we found in our two-year long research with @OPFS @FifeGingerbread & @PovertyAlliance: the child maintenance service needs urgent reform. ⚠️Too many children are being failed when separated parents can’t reach agreement. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g3…
