Historical NFTs (2015-2017) are a safe bet. They don't need a team or updates.
Every historical project is undervalued compared to punks and ether rocks. Punks was widely believed to be the "first NFT" even by the time they hit the Christy's auctions, which was not true. Their narrative changed a few times. I don't say this to devalue them, I think they're worth more actually.
There are projects older and more scarce than punks. Some projects as scarce as etherrocks, but not discovered by most of CT or your favorite influencer yet.

In early 2021 the OG art project CurioCards were rediscovered and stayed unpopular for several months. People who collected and traded them at the time had massive conviction bc of their respected age and intrinsic value proposition as one of the earliest art projects on Ethereum. Prices were laughably low in comparison to other more popular stuff at the time.
But as the bullrun heated up the market became more efficient and people searched for true value. The information assymmetry was explosively rewarded till the point were a whole set was sold for a staggering 1 Million dollars at Sothebys.
The best picks for the bullrun are NOT the most popular and being most popular doesn't mean you have the best picks. Stick to rational, logic and proven human behavior and just wait for the market to desperately seek for value again. Anything else is highly risky or has already captured most of it's value meaning great opportunity cost.
Right now the NFT space is an eccho bubble with no true new market participants. Most people in this space are wrong about most things and only a tiny fraction of people will make it.
Curcular reasoning and status quo bias are the most common philosophical pillars of NFT people, lacking general collectors mindset or conviction and having the need to cling to someone that might know better.

There's a reason we use terms like 'battle tested' in crypto.
When you have a lot of funds on-chain in crypto you very much like the assurances that something as 'simple and boring' as Ethereum and @aave can afford you.
I lost $42k in the harmony bridge hack and ever since then I am extremely selective about which chain I leave my money on.

The next meme coin cycle will be led by "Digital Collectibles." This is how we trim the fat, get rid of PnD scams / forced trends, and restore the memetic market.
The trenches will be revived and reborn in a new way. They will no longer look like degenerate gambling rings but rather nerdy collectors' forums. Memes with unique selling points and/or historical relevance will become rare collector items. Pump fun will still exist, but it will no longer be extractive or dilutive. Rather, it will exist as part of the greater collector hunting grounds.
When David Sacks came out and said meme coins should be treated as digital collectibles, most people saw this purely as regulatory speak. However, I think he was also establishing the right narrative for this market to continue to grow into the future. It's how meme coins should be looked at and also how they can manifest long-term hodlers value.
A year from now, you won't be trading memes; you'll be collecting them. I've started positioning myself for this narrative by accumulating cheap memes that are exactly that (have collectable value).
My highest conviction play currently is $WAAC. Among many things, I consider WAAC to be the "genesis meme" and a top collector's item. It's the first ever meme coin, was fair launched, has a niche techie community, and ticks all the boxes to do exceptionally well in the future digital collectibles market.
