In 2025, ICCWC supported 140 countries in strengthening their responses to wildlife and forest crime through capacity-building, technical assistance, operational support and international cooperation.
Countries made progress in using ICCWC tools and services, enhancing multi-agency collaboration and turning strategic commitments into concrete enforcement action.
Through the combined expertise of its five partner organizations, @CITES, @INTERPOL_EC, @UNODC_ENV, the @WBG_ClimateEnv and the @WCO_OMD, ICCWC is helping strengthen criminal justice systems and build a more coordinated global response to wildlife crime.

Wildlife Crime = Biodiversity Loss
Every illegally traded animal or plant species represents more than a single loss. Wildlife crime drives species decline, disrupts ecosystems and threatens the biodiversity that communities and economies depend on.

Rooting Out Corruption: An Introduction to Addressing the Corruption Fuelling Forest Loss (2023)
This publication explores the role and impact of corruption in driving forest loss and highlights how global forest management is interconnected. It examines how conservation efforts in one country can unintentionally shift pressure onto primary forests elsewhere, particularly in regions where governance structures may be weaker and corruption more prevalent.

Illegal wildlife trade threatens wildlife and human health.
The capture, transport and sale of wild animals can increase opportunities for pathogens to spread between wildlife, domestic animals and people. At the same time, wildlife crime contributes to biodiversity loss and ecosystem disruption. Protecting wildlife helps protect both planetary and human health.

Migratory birds cross thousands of kilometres and countless borders. Wildlife crime does too.
Every year, migratory birds connect countries, ecosystems and communities through their remarkable journeys. Yet along their flyways, many face threats from illegal killing, poisoning, trapping and trafficking.
This #WorldMigratoryBirdDay, we are reminded that protecting migratory birds requires international cooperation, strong enforcement, and collective action against wildlife crime. Together, we can help safeguard their journeys across borders and generations.

#LookingBack In June 2025, with ICCWC’s operational support, Peruvian authorities dismantled a criminal network known as “Los Depredadores del Oriente”, an international network operating out of Peru and engaged in large-scale wildlife trafficking and related offences, including environmental depredation, bribery, fraud, corruption and document falsification.

Congratulations to @thaicustoms on the interception of 446 large tusk pieces & 950 smaller ivory pieces in transit through Laem Chabang port.
Thai authorities are now pursuing a transnational investigation, building on information exchanged with law enforcement counterparts in Africa and Asia.
The seizure follows up on the 2025 Wildlife Inter-Regional Enforcement (WIRE) Forum, with support from @UNODC and @WJCommission under ICCWC #GUARDWildlife.
What is ICCWC?
The International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) is the collaborative partnership of five inter-governmental organizations working together to strengthen criminal justice systems and build long-term capacity among authorities to address wildlife crime.
ICCWC's partner organizations are the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (@CITES) Secretariat, the International Criminal Police Organization (@INTERPOL_HQ), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (@UNODC), the @WorldBankGroup (WBG) and the World Customs Organization (@WCO_OMD).
Together, they support countries in preventing, investigating and prosecuting wildlife crime.

🌳 Meet the Species: Rosewood
Rosewood refers to several high-value tropical hardwood species found across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Prized for their rich colour, durability and distinctive grain, rosewood is used in luxury furniture, musical instruments and decorative carvings.
#MeetTheSpecies #Rosewood #ForestCrime #ICCWC #TogetherAgainstWildlifeCrime
🌳 The illegal trade in rosewood threatens forests, biodiversity and livelihoods, while generating profits for criminal networks operating across borders.
To tackle these crimes, countries need strong cooperation among law enforcement, customs, prosecutors and other criminal justice authorities.
ICCWC supports countries in strengthening responses to wildlife and forest crime, helping disrupt criminal networks behind illegal trade and bring offenders to justice.

What was once viewed primarily as a conservation issue is now widely recognized as a serious form of transnational organized crime.
Wildlife crime threatens biodiversity, human rights, security and sustainable development. Tackling it requires strong partnerships, effective enforcement and international cooperation.
These were among the key messages shared by @CITES Secretary-General Ivonne Higuero during the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
