Stone cold classic review imo. Totally wrong about the devils of course but it’s super funny and it comes to mind whenever I watch a movie even nominally based on a true story. β€œHe has exposed Cardinal Richelieu as a political schemer” always makes me laugh
Roger Ebert's zero stars review of The Devils rogerebert.com/reviews/the-d… Roger also gave zero stars to: Texas Chainsaw I Spit On Your Grave The Hitcher Police Academy Death Wish 2 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me he gave 1 star to Blue Velvet & The Thing & half a star to Hellraiser

A lot of analysis of the film focuses on gender and sexuality, fair enough, but I haven’t seen many people discuss how the film links the disciplining of sexual transgression - directly - to the expansion of the centralized, absolutist state
One aspect of The Devils: the opposition between the personal indiscretion of Grandier and and the systemic sexual perversion of the Church, wherein Grandier’s transgression is made problematic essentially only through the machinations of the politics of state consolidation

I ordered The Devils of Loudon by Aldous Houxly but in the mean time I was reading online about the historical events and what do you mean they produced a signed contract between Grandier and the Devil 😭

Focusing too much on individual scenes for shock value (and shock is absolutely one of the film's goals) draws the audience into complicity with the burghers who only laugh at the nuns By the time they realize what's actually happening the city walls have already been undermined

One of the greatest contemplations on the state in film
It’s such a fascinating contradiction Russell lays into the story, Richelieu merging the church and state to horrific ends, Grandier merging them to defend the city he loves and its people.

I went into The Devils thinking it was going to be freaky sex stuff. which don’t get me wrong there 100% was, but I hardly noticed as it was wedged into a compelling historical drama about the reconstitution of french catholic monarchal rule after the European wars of religion
Somebody get these DEVILS out of here!

I can’t stop thinking about Grandier big dicking the Baron rolling up with his crew and nothing but a bunch of papers in his hand and then delivering an anti-nationalist sermon to his flock. God it’s the coolest movie ever

one of my favorite things about THE DEVILS is that although its about the marriage of church and state, both parties find each other beneath them, and look down upon them. all they care about is acquiring more power. the king makes a mockery with the "vial of jesus blood" & (1/3)

Style guide for comics question: do you feel like its weird to abbreviated titles in dialog? Personally I think it's strange in this context.

Short answer: his dialogue is tedious; his thematic preoccupations are shallow; he flattens his protagonists into vessels for his own guilt, boredom, and ennui; his bag of tricks begins and ends with Alan Moore's leftovers; his storytelling is stultifying and inert. Long answer:
Do people authentically dislike Tom King's writing or is it the usual thing that goes on here where people dislike him for political reasons and then search for aesthetic reasons to justify their opinions?
