I ordered The Devils of Loudon by Aldous Houxly but in the mean time I was reading online about the historical events and what do you mean they produced a signed contract between Grandier and the Devil 😭

The Devils is making me really want to rewatch "Yo, la peor de todas," the other movie I saw this year about 17th century nuns and how their behavior is controlled by the Church and the State

Focusing too much on individual scenes for shock value (and shock is absolutely one of the film's goals) draws the audience into complicity with the burghers who only laugh at the nuns

I went into The Devils thinking it was going to be freaky sex stuff. which don’t get me wrong there 100% was, but I hardly noticed as it was wedged into a compelling historical drama about the reconstitution of french catholic monarchal rule after the European wars of religion

one of my favorite things about THE DEVILS is that although its about the marriage of church and state, both parties find each other beneath them, and look down upon them. all they care about is acquiring more power. the king makes a mockery with the "vial of jesus blood" & (1/3)
So many negative criticisms of The Devils seem to completely ignore the theme of State Power bc they are clearly just upset about the religious imagery
