“Full moon, half moon, total eclipse” I wonder how many British people’s heads this McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes ad has lived in since the last UK 1999 eclipse? 27 years on I still murmur it to myself every time* I hear “total eclipse”.

Drinkflation? Alas, Molson Coors have decided to reduce the 4% ABV of Carling down to surprise, surprise, 3.4%.The watering-down process will commence in October. What I found flabbergasting was that they said it would still have the same “perfect balance & refreshing taste!” 😆

It's no surprise some people don't like anchovies when the quality varies this much (but the price doesn't)! "We put 10 tinned and jarred varieties to the test to see which anchovies are the best catch for your cash." theguardian.com/thefilter/20…

Just spotted this. It's misleading and unnecessary, who eats 5/6th of a bag?

SPAM parties were all the rage in 1947, where lucky partygoers got to make their own SPAMwich! Why not try this at your next soirée?

For today’s @ftweekend I am at Banquet 88 in st Katherine’s Dock celebrating the joys of the functionally designed Chinese restaurant, where the big light is on and the stars are the superb dim sum and roast Cantonese meats. ft.com/content/eca8d76f-8436…

For today’s @ftweekend I went to Jul’s, a frankly weird, charmless, over priced calamity of a restaurant in st james’s. I did this so you wouldn’t have to. Have the first paragraph and a link. ft.com/content/b5eba584-7944…

What’s the secret to @tobycarvery? How can it make money when it offers “unlimited” carvery 8am to 10pm? And meat wholesale prices have 📈? And why has it become vaguely cool? I spent all day there to find out…🧵1/5

If Grace Dent and Jay Rayner (below) review something in the same week it must be a hot ticket! ‘The chicken is like Sunday dinner on performance steroids.’ Appalachia, nr Old Street, London N1. theguardian.com/food/2026/ju…
For today’s @ftweekend , marking the US 250th, I’m at Appalachia, a new counter restaurant in London’s Shoreditch which is less mountain country restaurant than Brooklyn hipster outfit, in a good way. (The forth pic is a fab crab and ginger omelette) ft.com/content/a2ded5a4-2652…

Tom Kerridge never mentions the numbers. If he did, he’d realise he’s asking for the rest of us should pay £12bn more tax, or there should be £12bn of spending cuts, to fund a huge tax cut for the hospitality industry.
Celebrity Chef Tom Kerridge has told LBC that Andy Burnham is largely to thank for Manchester's “incredible cultural food scene”- but warned Rachel Reeves’ VAT charge risks crippling Britain’s hospitality industry. lbc.co.uk/article/tom-kerrid…

Councils really need to wake up and start protecting and supporting our nightlife. Councils like Westminster are killing off thriving areas like Soho. They are crippling businesses and costing jobs. My comments in today’s Guardian. theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…
