Europe is already developing its own alternatives to Starlink, and the appetite for continued dependence upon American technology is likely to diminish considerably. Europeans are increasingly questioning why they should purchase products and services from a country whose administration they perceive as abusing its position, undermining longstanding alliances and threatening their security. Even the United States Ambassador appears to have learnt that inflammatory public interventions do little to improve an already strained relationship. Trust between Europe and the United States is deteriorating, and the consequences extend far beyond trade or technology. When a supposed ally begins to be perceived as a threat rather than a source of security, the damage to that relationship could take generations to repair. Europe must now recognise the dangers of excessive dependence upon the United States and accelerate its own technological, economic and defence independence.
