Antarctic’s ‘doomsday’ Thwaites glacier is melting twice as fast as scientists believed, a new study shows. It is expected eventually to raise sea levels two feet by itself, and
could unleash other melting that could bring them up a full 10 feet.

Looking at this photograph, I assumed I was looking at history.
Disturbingly, some seem to think it is a blueprint.
Public executions are not a display of strength. They are bread and circuses: state killing repackaged as public entertainment for the social media age.

After Israel occupied Gaza & the West Bank in the June 1967 War, Israeli leaders established a committee to manage the occupation.
The committee formulated a document on the principles guiding Israeli operations in Palestine.
In the first draft of the document, the first sentence of the first paragraph reads: “the policy aim is to bring about the exit of the maximum number of Arabs from the occupied territories."
Israel's genocide of the Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank has been in the making for 58 years. youtube.com/watch?v=OAIAHbV9…

On 13 September, an MSF bus carrying 10 humanitarian staff in Gaza City was damaged by an Israeli airstrike on a targeted vehicle just two metres away. One of our colleagues was injured in the strike.
The bus was clearly identified as an MSF vehicle, with a large MSF sticker visible on its roof. Once again, Israeli forces have shown a blatant disregard for the safety of humanitarian and medical personnel.
Nowhere is safe in Gaza. Civilians, healthcare workers and humanitarian staff must be protected. Clearly marked medical and humanitarian vehicles must be spared from attacks.

Tommo decided to branch out into… KIDNAPPING

A 24-year-old PhD student spent two years sledgehammering poles into a field outside Cambridge to build a radio telescope, then had to read what it printed out.
It produced about 100 feet of chart paper a day. She went through it by hand, looking for patterns in ink.
In November 1967 she found what she called a bit of scruff. A quarter of an inch of squiggle on a roll of paper, in a signal she described as one part in ten million.
Her supervisor said it was interference. She kept going anyway, partly because she was convinced she was not good enough to be there and would be found out. So she checked everything.
The scruff came back, on schedule, pulsing every 1.337 seconds from a fixed point in the sky. Then she found three more.
Jocelyn Bell Burnell had discovered pulsars, the collapsed cores of dead stars, spinning fast enough to sweep a beam of radio waves past the earth like a lighthouse. Nothing known could produce a signal that regular, and for a while they seriously wondered about aliens.
The 1974 Nobel Prize went to her supervisor. She was not on it.
She has been asked about it for fifty years and has never once been bitter in public, saying students were simply not recognised in those days.
In 2018 she was given a special prize worth about 2.3 million pounds for the discovery. She gave every penny of it away, to fund physics PhDs for people who do not usually get them.

TV Go Home (1999-2001) Charlie Brooker's TV listings satire has pretty much vanished from the web now, but for a while it was a word of mouth online phenomenon.
Carefully made spoof TV listings of bleakly funny or surreal TV shows showed where the media world was heading at the end of the Nineties: cruel, crude, self indulgent and desperate for viewers. Along with Brass Eye and Attention Scum, TV Go Home was a hellish distorting mirror for British mass culture - the people who made it and the people who consumed it.
Channel 4 brought it to the small screen a couple of times: there was a TV Go Home six part series in 2001 and obnoxious wannabe media edgelord Nathan Barley had his own show in 2005. There was also a book of the website published in 2001 by Fourth Estate in 2001.
I've said it before, but we are not really archiving much online culture from Web 1.0 and that's going to be a big problem at some point. Old sites are vanishing, blogs are disappearing and personal web pages are going dark. We're relying on volunteer projects to capture what they can, but there's no guarantee these will keep going. There's already more bot traffic online than human traffic and AI content is slowly filling up the online space. Retaining even a fraction of the WWW world we built, and the culture that went with it, is quite a challenge.

Officers are this afternoon policing a UKIP march and rally, and a counter protest in central London.
To ensure the event remains peaceful and to prevent serious disorder, under Section 158 of the Crime and Policing Act 2026 we are designating the entire area in the map attached.
That means that anyone in this area wearing a face covering is liable to be arrested for concealing their identity at a protest.
This power is in force until 18:00hrs.
